Transferring Files to the SacLink and Sac State Web Servers Using Fetch

These FTP directions apply to Macintosh users.  If you do not have an FTP program on your computer, you may download a free copy of Fetch from http://fetchsoftworks.com.  You must select Educational/Charitable under the Licensing section of the web page to apply for a free license to Fetch.

Once you have created your web pages, organized them into directories or folders, and tested them, you are ready to transfer them to the Web Server.  Use the FTP application Fetch to transfer the documents.

Note:  You need a SacLink or CSUS Web Server account.  For information on activating your SacLink Web page see http://www.csus.edu/saclink/web/index.stm.  CSUS Web Server accounts can be obtained by faculty, staff, and student organizations.  To request a CSUS Web Server account fill out the Request for Web Server Account form.

Complete the following steps to transfer your files:

Setting up for the first time

  1. Run Fetch.  The New Connection dialog box appears.

  2. Click Cancel to close the New Connection dialog box.

  3. Choose New Shortcut from the Customize menu.  The Shortcut Editor dialog box appears.
Note: In older versions of Fetch, this dialog box may be called Bookmark Editor.

  5. In the Name box, type CSUS Web.

  6. In the Type drop down list, select File.

  7. In the Host box, type ftp.saclink.csus.edu for SacLink personal web pages or type www.csus.edu for CSUS Web Server accounts.

  8. For both types of accounts, enter your SacLink user name in the User ID box.

  9. Skip over the Password box.

  10. Note:  For security reasons, you should skip over the Password box so that you don't save it with the session information.  If you save it, anyone could start Fetch, access your CSUS Web Server account, and gain full access to your Web files.

  11. In the Directory box type your CSUS Web directory path.

  12. SacLink web pages are located in the Web folder.  To find the path for CSUS Web server accounts, refer to your copy of the Request for Web Server Account form.  An example of a CSUS Web directory path is:  /indiv/s/smithja

  13. Click OK.  The Shortcut Editor dialog box closes.
