Sacramento State Kinesiology and Health Science Professor David Mandeville was awarded the 2009 Holiday Spirit of Giving Plaque from the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services.

A Sacramento State professor was awarded the 2009 Holiday Spirit of Giving Plaque from the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services June 11 for helping area families.

David Mandeville, Kinesiology and Health Science, helped collect 2,200 pounds of nonperishable food during a fall food drive. He was assisted by fellow faculty members Heather Diaz and Patty Woodward. Their collection was the largest donation generated by a company in the Sacramento area.

Mandeville says he became aware of the need for donations last fall when he heard a National Public Radio announcement that described the food bank's situation as "perilous."

"The opportunity to work with the department and interface with the community has been an incredible experience for me as a new faculty member," says Mandeville, who joined Sacramento State in fall 2009.

Mandeville also coordinated a second drive during the spring which generated 7,700 pounds of food.

Mandeville says he wants to continue to develop the relationship between Sac State and Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services through student internships and volunteer outreach. As he puts it, "This is just the tip of the iceberg."
