Sacramento State sponsored a California Senatorial Candidates Forum Oct. 27 in the University Union. This was the second forum sponsored by the University this month and will help voters compare the candidates’ positons on the issues and to make informed choices on Nov 2.

The Senate District 1 forum was moderated by Sacramento State Professor Val Smith, of the University’s Communication Studies Department. Communication Studies students assisted with the question-and-answer portion of the forum.

Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Sacramento, and Rancho Cordova Democratic Mayor Ken Cooley took part in the lively debate in the University Union Ballroom and the event was live streamed on Sacramento State’s website.

Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, and former Republican Assemblywoman and current member of board of equalization, Barbara Alby were invited but declined to attend.

The District 1 forum was transmitted via live video streaming, courtesy of Sacramento State’s Academic Technology and Creative Services in tandem with Information Resources and Technology. Live-streaming is important because this sprawling senate district encompasses 12 counties. The entire debate is now available for viewing at http://www.csus.edu/sacstatenews/Articles/2010/10/senatedebate102710.html.

Comprehensive coverage is consistent with the CSU system’s public-service mandate that political forums and debates be presented on campuses during an election cycle. It also dovetails with Destination 2010, President Alexander Gonzalez’ goal of strengthening the bond between campus and community.
