University President Alexander Gonzalez will host two campus gatherings this week.
A University Convocation will be convened today from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Convened in cooperation with the Faculty Senate, the gathering for all students, faculty and staff will explore fostering community on campus.
The Senate approached the President last semester about holding convocations to look at important issues facing Sacramento State and universities across the country. This topic stems from the bullying-related suicide of a Rutgers student in September, which has focused renewed attention on the role a university plays in creating a sense of community that responds to these types of issues before they become tragedies.
Guest speakers include journalist and scholar Helen Zia.
University Policy permits the cancellation of class meetings during this period to facilitate involvement by faculty and students.
For classes not canceled, students are free to attend the convocation and may not be penalized for class absences if they attend the convocation. Faculty who cancel classes or office hours to attend should follow established department procedures for alerting of such cancellations. Students who attend the convocation instead of class should inform the instructor of the class beforehand of their decision to attend the event. Staff wishing to attend this convocation are responsible for obtaining the permission of their supervisor in advance.
Gonzalez will hold a budget town hall at noon Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium. The President will provide an update on the state budget, the CSU budget and how that all could affect Sacramento State.
