Sacramento State’s partnership this year with Project LEAD — the initiative to target low-income ninth-graders who show potential to be first-generation college graduates — will culminate with “Building Tomorrow’s LEADers Today,” a gathering from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the University Union.

The event will bring together students and parents from the four participating Sacramento high schools — Sacramento Charter, Hiram Johnson, Grant Union and John F. Kennedy — for workshops focusing on parental support, financial aid and the college admission process.

Parental workshops include:

•    Family Dynamics and Positive Communications—Minimizing the Drama
•    Helping Your Teen Succeed Academically (They’re Smarter Than They’re Pretending to Be)

Student workshops:
•    Major and Career Exploration
•    Health and Wellness
•    Connecting High School to College (Admissions and Financial Aid Basics)

The keynote speaker will be Sacramento State Professor Kimo Ah-Yun, chair of the Department of Communication Studies. Lunch is included, and the health and wellness workshop at the WELL will include rock-wall climbing, dodgeball and zumba, among other activities.
