New associate dean a Sac State alum

06-08-2011

Jane Bruner will become associate dean of Sacramento State’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, effective Monday, Aug. 1. A graduate of Sac State with a B.S. in Biological Sciences, her specialty is clinical laboratory technology. Her Ph.D. from UC Davis is in microbiology.

As a faculty member at California State University, Stanislaus, since 2000, Bruner held several administrative positions. She was the principal investigator on large grants aimed at increasing the participation of underserved students in science and mathematics. “Her breadth of experience and commitment to student learning will be an asset to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics,” says Dean Jill Trainer.

That experience includes team teaching a clinical hematology class with Rose Leigh Vines, chair of Sac State’s Department of Biological Sciences, beginning in 2001. The upper-level course is a prerequisite for entering clinical lab scientist (CLS) training programs to become professionals with a crucial role in disease detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Their course became so popular that Vines and Bruner sought ways to attract a wider audience. Through an unprecedented intercampus collaboration, using cutting-edge distance learning technologies, they began to offer the course using online materials, two-way IP videoconferencing, and synchronous and asynchronous video-streaming technology.

Four years ago, Sac State’s College of Continuing Education teamed with the instructors to facilitate statewide expansion of the class, allowing even greater enrollment. Students throughout California now watch the lecture series. The program’s overwhelming success as a distance-learning model then attracted global interest.

Clinical Hematology will graduate to international status this summer when the students from APOLLON, Wilhelm Büchner’s College of Allied Health Services in Germany, enroll in the course.
