New students call Sac State ‘home sweet home’
About 1,600 students, along with their families, will move pillows, clothing, computers, televisions, refrigerators – you name it – into Sacramento State’s residence halls beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, and running through Sunday.
Helping them will be about 300 student club members assisting on their last Friday of summer break, volunteering a total of nearly 2,400 hours.
The largest contingent of new residents – about 1,000 students – will be first-time college goers, and you can usually count on a few tears from family members as their students leave the next.
“This day is as special to us as it is for the students and their families,” says Housing and Residential Life Director Michael Speros. “We really look forward to welcoming our community members.”
The residence halls have something new to offer students this year. The car-sharing network Zipcar will have a Toyota Prius and a Ford Focus available 24/7 for students – and faculty and staff – to use for off-campus appointments, dates or pleasure drives. Those vehicles join 10 other cars at five different locations around Sacramento.
