Program lights TORCH for 3rd grade readers

08-24-2011

Sacramento State, in partnership with the City of Sacramento and Sacramento City Unified School District, has recognized the vital role literacy plays in student success with their new project, Lighting the TORCH for 3rd Grade Literacy.

The Lighting the TORCH (Tutoring, Outreach and Reading with Children) for 3rd Grade Literacy project will link Sacramento State’s student leadership, student clubs and student organizations with the City of Sacramento’s after-school START program in the Sacramento City Unified School District.

University faculty in the field of literacy will provide the training, curriculum will be developed, and literacy bags will be created containing the materials tutors will need to teach the children. The University Library will shelve and operate a checkout system for the literacy bags.

Sacramento State Professor Jana Noel, the project’s director, says, “Lighting the TORCH for 3rd Grade Literacy is a great example of Sacramento State's ongoing commitment to the Sacramento region, and also exemplifies how a university and city can partner to create meaningful programs.”

For the pilot year 2011-12, more than 150 Sacramento State students will provide one-on-one tutoring for Sacramento children in kindergarten through third grade.
