Sacramento State’s Center for California Studies and Department of Women’s Studies are co-sponsoring a campus event to mark the 100th anniversary of the approval of women’s suffrage in California. This signal achievement was effected by the October 1911 passage of a constitutional amendment submitted to the voters by the state Legislature.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen will be the keynote speaker for the event, which is free and open to the public. It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the University Union Ballroom.

A panel of several speakers will discuss the ways American women’s legal rights have changed since 1911, ongoing issues pertaining to women’s rights in other countries and how they have been influenced by the women’s movement. Discussions will also deal with continuing challenges for women and how young people might get involved in those issues.

Dean Charles Gossett of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies will introduce the event and moderate the panel. “This is a wonderful opportunity,” Gossett says, “for the university to celebrate its commitment to gender equality and to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of women to California. The legal equality achieved by the grant of suffrage was only the beginning of an ongoing process to achieve full legal and social equality for women.”
