CCE celebrates 60 years of service

01-03-2012

For more than a half century, Sacramento State’s College of Continuing Education has proven the value of continued learning by offering courses, workshops and other training programs for adults seeking new skills and career advancement. Now it’s time to celebrate the College’s 60 years of service to the community.

From Tuesday, Jan. 17, through Friday, Jan. 20, CCE will host several celebrations to mark the occasion. In keeping with CCE’s mission, the celebratory events are also representative of the College’s community outreach efforts.

There will be a campus community appreciation day, a reception for new Dean Guido Krickx, and a healthcare fair, complete with blood drive and a tour of the new student ambulance.

A semi-autonomous unit at Sacramento State, CCE provides education and training for college graduates and businesses to enhance professional development. College faculty and staff also hold training sessions for emergency medical technicians and other first responders, and organize international study opportunities.

The college began life in 1951 as Educational Services at Sacramento State College, which at that time shared a campus with what is now Sacramento City College. Stephen Walker was the first dean.

The college moved to its current home in Napa Hall in 2002 and offers several undergraduate and graduate degree programs; global education experiences; professional certificates in areas such as green business operations and meeting and event planning; and leadership programs for government executives and managers.

CCE alumni are found throughout Sacramento, assuming crucial roles in their professions.

Karen Johnson was in the first graduating class of the Leadership for the Government Executive program. “LGE graduates learn to be more effective leaders who can navigate these tough economic realities, motivate others, promote a culture in which people value themselves, and provide strategic direction and better communication,” says Johnson.

The four-day anniversary observance includes:

  • Jan. 17: Campus Community Appreciation Day – a professional development workshop.
  • Jan. 18: Training and Development Forum, Leadership Symposium, Dean’s Reception.
  • Jan. 19: International Programs Fair, Allied Healthcare Fair
  • Jan. 20: Staff Appreciation: CCE Through the Decades
