Lively, flamboyant, and definitely creative. It’s time for Sacramento State’s annual Art Ball, a celebration of visual arts so big that it can’t be contained in one hall.

Supported by the Art Chapter of the University’s Alumni Association, this year’s free event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, featuring the best of student paintings, sculpture, drawing, metal work, ceramics, and electronic art, plus a few extra treats.

WSRW, by Leslie Philpott, will be on displayed at  the MA Art Show in the Library Galley Annex.

The main focus will be in Kadema Hall, where the Senior Art Show in the Else and Witt galleries will host its official reception, attended by the artists themselves. This display of the finest works by graduating seniors in the Art Program runs April 30-May 16. Gallery hours are noon-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. “It is always a great opportunity to see what the next generation of artists is up to in their studios,” says Art Professor Robert Ortbal. “This exhibit is like several open studios’ tours rolled into a one-stop exhibition.”

Kadema will also offer music and refreshments in the breezeway and courtyard, a pinhole photography exhibit in Room 264 and intermediate drawing samples in Room 268. The open hallway between Rooms 130 and 101 will be filled with examples of student works in ceramics.

Stroll over to the Library Gallery and enjoy the reception for “Confluence,” an exhibit of MA candidate artwork that will be open until 7 that night. The exhibit runs May 4-31. Library Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The show features the work of six talented graduate students with vastly different art practices. Works range from geometric minimalist shapes and organic forms to art that relies on dramatic scale, surprising composition and inventive colors.

From the Library Gallery, patrons can head over to Mariposa Hall, where new media and electronic art by Sacramento State students will be on view in Room 1007. Then head over to the Art Sculpture Lab for a collection of paintings and drawings.

Four locations, a wide variety of styles and media, music and more – patrons will definitely have a ball.
