Sacramento State students will have the opportunity to buy organic and fresh fruits and vegetables on campus as the University hosts its first farmers market from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, on the grassy area outside The WELL called the South Green.

The farmers market will include a handful of local vendors from Sacramento and the surrounding area selling produce and flowers to students, faculty and staff.
The market is a rare chance for students to meet the people who actually grow and pick the food they will eat. Farmers markets can also be less expensive than supermarkets.
“It tends to be cheaper to go to a farmers market because you’re buying straight from the food vendor,” ASI Marketing Manager Reuben Greenwald says. “Often you’re meeting the person who’s picked it.”
The WELL Café will also get involved with a treats-for-sale table, and there will be useful cooking demonstrations at the Cove inside The WELL. Students can learn tips and tricks on preparing fresh produce and other foods they might not usually buy.
Students voiced their desire for a farmers market to Associated Students Inc. Greenwald says this is the perfect opportunity for students to know their voices are being heard.
“It’s really a way for them to see that their ideas are getting implemented right here on campus through their ASI,” he says. “They’re listening to the students’ opinions and suggestions.”
ASI eventually hopes to add music and other facets to the market, making it a perfect bimonthly community-building event. Currently, students, faculty and staff are invited to take part. However, ASI is hoping the success of this event will bring more resources for larger farmers markets in the future.
