Sacramento State’s personable “O-Team” warmly welcomed the newest swarm of Hornets throughout July for new-student orientation – a crucial factor for students to start out on the right foot.

Orientation

Sac State newcomers forged friendships, received guidance and got acclimated to the campus at new-student orientation.

Orientation is all about preparation. Students meet one another, attend academic advising sessions, learn about graduation requirements, and confer with faculty from their respective major and minor fields. Workshops provide information about campus life, extracurricular activities and opportunities as a Sacramento State student and future alum.

Students who have completed fewer than 19 college units are considered first-year students. Those who have attended another college or university and have completed 19 or more units are considered transfer students. Both groups are required to attend orientation.

“My goal for new-student orientation is to help students make a successful transition into Sacramento State,” says Ed Mills, associate vice president for Student Affairs, Enrollment and Student Support. “I want them to know that there is a vast network of support services, all kinds of clubs and organizations, and a caring and committed faculty.”

That caring, personal touch is underscored by two enthusiastic members of Sac State’s O-Team.

Edward Mayes, who graduated this spring, has been a student orientation guide for the last four years. “I really enjoy helping new students find their way around,” he says, “because orientation was so important to me when I first came to Sac State.”

As a transfer student last year, Emilia Calderon is no less grateful for the helping hand she received. “I was lost coming from a small East Bay school,” she says, “and the O-Team was there for me.”

A grateful parent punctuated that personal touch in a thank-you note to Mills: “I just want to acknowledge and applaud CSUS and its orientation team and administrators. Yesterday's parent orientation was thorough, friendly, and informative; I drove home feeling very happy that my son has selected Sac State.”
