Three Sac State teams in I2P competition

All three Sacramento State teams that entered the 2012 statewide CSUPERB I2P early-stage biotechnology commercialization competition have qualified for the finals to be held Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 3-5, at the Marriott Anaheim.

Grant will combat diabetes in Hmong community

Sacramento State has received the first $200,713 of a $780,449 grant to help members of the city’s Hmong community receive better treatment for advanced cases of diabetes. The grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities was announced by Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s office.

Studies under way at Sac State would benefit boomers

Sacramento State biomechanics Professor David Mandeville has launched two clinical studies to address major vulnerabilities among older people: the high incidence of knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged women, which he believes may be related to the menopause transition, and the likelihood that any elderly person will suffer a devastating fall.

Students' exhibit at Oakland museum

In the fall of 2011, the nine students in Professor Lee Simpson’s graduate-level Public History class took on the assignment to somehow define Sacramento in an installation for the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). The result is “What’s Happening Sacramento,” on display through Sunday, March 24, in the Gallery of California History.

PT Mock Clinic aids injured player's rehab

Will Barker, 19, was a junior at Sacramento’s Valley High, playing defensive back on the football team, in 2009 when he broke his neck and suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury while making a tackle on a Davis High player. He can move his arms and has some feeling in his legs since undergoing spinal surgery. But he can’t walk. Not yet.

Made at Sac State Legacy: Michael Cronan

Michael Cronan, 61, was a branding guru with a knack for names. He dreamed up the moniker “TiVo” on his own and “Kindle” in collaboration with his wife, Karin Hibma. They were partners in the Berkeley naming, visual identity and brand strategy firm ::CRONAN:: until his death Tuesday, Jan. 1. Cronan had battled colon cancer.

Sacramento State alum Ryan Coogler’s first feature-length film, Fruitvale, has won top honors at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. He captured both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the category of U.S.: Dramatic. 'Vagina Monologues' set for Feb. 7

Of the 21 female students and one faculty member cast in Sacramento State’s upcoming production of The Vagina Monologues, only one is studying theater arts. The rest come from a variety of campus disciplines, including social work, recreation and leisure, and biology.
