Sacramento State’s Sustainability Team is co-hosting Mulching Mania on campus with the Sacramento Tree Foundation from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Main Quad near Lassen, Sacramento, and Douglass halls. Student volunteers will be on hand to spread organic compost and mulch around plant beds and trees.
Sac State’s official mascot, Herky, poses with the University’s new recycling mascot, the Recycle Maniac.
Cited by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Campus USA, Sacramento State generated and recycled about 150 tons of leaf mulch last fall. So it’s fitting that the “Green Machine” would mobilize to help beautify our campus. Those who want to volunteer for the event can contact the Sustainability Team at email@example.com.
The event comes on the heels of Recycle Mania/Game Day Mania on Thursday, Feb. 28, when the Hornet hoopsters hosted Weber State. Student volunteers from the Environmental Student Organization (ESO) pitched in that evening, promoting recycling and sustainability, and collecting recycling from the game. The collected recyclables from that night will be entered into the national Recycle Mania competition, which runs through Saturday, March 30.
Sac State’s first-year entry in this national recycling competition is in the Benchmark Division and entails reporting in three categories: e-waste collection, cardboard collection and a game-day recycling collection. Feb. 28 also featured the unveiling of the new sustainability recycling mascot, The Recycle Maniac.
Also approaching is Campus Earth Day. Led by ESO and the efforts of the Sac State Sustainability Team, this year’s Earth Day celebration is shaping up to be an exciting collaborative event. The campus will celebrate Earth Week during the week of April 15-22, with its Earth Day celebration Wednesday, April 17. Collaboration among many organizations on campus, as well as faculty and staff, is making the energy surrounding Earth Day vibrant.
