Sacramento State’s Hornet Racing Team is gearing up for another successful year.

Last summer saw the squad’s custom race car make a strong showing against top-flight intercollegiate competition in Lincoln, Neb. Save for a blown gasket during the endurance race, the Hornets were well on the way to their finest showing. Read earlier story

This year promises to be even finer as the students put the finishing touches on HR 2013. For a sneak preview and a peek under the cowl, come to the unveiling at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, in Santa Clara Hall 1357.

Stop by and chat with team members who are excited to show off their final product before the Lincoln competition. Festivities will include a tasty barbecue and a silent auction. Proceeds will go toward paying for car parts and the team’s travel to Lincoln. RSVP at http://hr2013unveil.eventbrite.com.

Meantime, the Hornet racing squad continues to connect with the community in general and schools in particular.

In April, the team visited Sutter Middle School and MLK Jr. Technology Academy as part of A World in Motion, a program that brings science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life in the classroom.

“On the first visit, we had the students try to gear the motorized cars to go up a steep incline for about an hour and a half,” says team member Marcos Navarro. “On the second visit, we gave a presentation on what a year as a Formula student is like, and had them gear the cars for top speed and let them race the cars.”

Several weeks ago, a class from Sutter Middle School visited the shop in Santa Clara Hall to see the new chassis and listen to students describe the process of building a racer from scratch. This year, the team has hosted many groups that want a closer look at the construction process.

On Sunday, May 19, the team travels to Sonoma for the beginning of its new sponsor relationship with Sonoma Raceway. “We will have our car and posters on display at this prime location,” Navarro says. In return for volunteering at the track and promoting ticket sales, the team will receive a portion of the proceeds.
