Chevelle Newsome, a Sacramento State alumna and longtime faculty member, has been named the University’s dean of Graduate Studies. The announcement was made by University President Alexander Gonzalez, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Interim) Charles W. Gossett.

Newsome has been serving as interim dean for five years, since the post was established.

“Dr. Newsome was selected after a nationwide search among a very competitive pool of applicants,” Gossett says.

Newsome has extensive experience providing leadership at Sacramento State. She has been a special assistant to the President, associate dean of Graduate Education, administrator-in-charge of Educational Equity and Student Retention, and director of Academic Enrichment Programs.

She has assisted the President’s cabinet in promoting campus diversity and helped to launch the Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

As a Sacramento State student, Newsome majored in Organizational Communication, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1988 and her master’s in 1991. From there, she went to the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a doctorate in Communication, coming back to Sac State in 1994.

“I’m proud of Sacramento State,” Newsome says. “I believe in the mission and the vision of the University. I believe in what we do – offering our students a chance to go out in the world and apply what they’ve learned.”
