Sacramento State’s newest students will flood the University’s residence halls Friday, Aug. 30, bringing lamps, boxes of clothes, televisions, computers, and refrigerators. But there’s a lot of help waiting for them when they arrive.
Move-In Day begins at 8 a.m. when the students arrive with their parents, brothers, sisters, and any other family members who want to see them on their way to this new adventure.
University staff expect about 1,650 students, with more than 1,000 of them settling down in the traditional residence halls. The remaining 600 students will be moving into American River Courtyard, the suite-style hall for upper-division and transfer students.
While the process continues through the weekend, the big rush is Friday, and Student Organizations and Leadership (SOAL) has lined up more than 300 student volunteers to help newcomers unload vehicles and carry belongings across the parking lot, up the stairs, and into the rooms.
“Every year we are overwhelmed by the student leaders who volunteer their time to greet new Hornets and families at Move-In Day,” says SOAL Program Advisor Melissa Norrbom. “Many of them are paying it forward because of a positive experience they had when they moved in.”
The day also is a chance for the newcomers to learn more about their new home.
“We understand that new students and their parents will show up with anxiety and enthusiasm,” says Samuel Jones, senior associate director for Housing and Residential Life. “We’ll have a host of University departments available to answer last minute questions.”
Those departments include Financial Services; The WELL, Sac State’s fitness and wellness center; PEAK Adventures; and many others.
The new students won’t lack for something to do over the holiday weekend and in the weeks ahead. Hornet WOW, Weeks of Welcome, comprises a slate of activities such as free fitness and self-defense classes, noon music concerts, the ninth annual Sac State Throwdown dodgeball game, and the football team’s first pep rally.
The first event awaiting new residence hall occupants is a free weekend screening of Fast and Furious 6.
