Move In Day Students

Sacramento State is going all out to welcome new, transfer and returning students to campus for the Fall 2013 semester. The first Hornet Weeks of Welcome, also known as WOW, is 23 days of nonstop fun, adventures and learning.

“There is at least one free activity every day,” says Haley Myers, director of the University’s Parents & Families Program. “We want new students to engage in their campus. We want them to know they have friends here they don’t even know yet. There is a real community here.”

Hornet WOW kicks off Friday, Aug. 30, with a free screening of Fast & Furious 6 (2013) in the Housing Quad and ends Friday, Sept. 21, when the Hornet football takes on Southern Utah at Hornet Stadium. Students can use their OneCard for free game admission.

In between is a wide variety of offerings, including rope-climbing competitions and a family rock-wall climb at The WELL; a barbecue; Wednesday Nooner concerts; a lecture on class and racism in America by nationally known author and educator Tim Wise; Monday Night Football gatherings; Hornet soccer and volleyball games; fee-based backpacking and whitewater rafting trips; a self-defense class; fitness classes; farmers market; and the ninth annual Sac State Throwdown dodgeball tournament.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, more than 100 diverse student organizations kick off Club Days in the Quad, a two-week campaign to attract new members. On Thursday, Sept. 13, the PRIDE Center presents the panel discussion In-Queer-Y: You Have Questions, We Have Answers at Hinde Auditorium. And, on Friday, Sept. 14, transfer students get VIP treatment for the Hornets’ football home opener against Southern Oregon. They and their parents are invited to watch the game from The WELL’s Terrace Suite overlooking the field.

A highlight of the semester will be the 14th annual Phlagleblast, set for Thursday, Sept. 12, at the University Union, with live music, caricature and balloon artists, food samples and a prize drawing.

“It’s been exciting to see how much enthusiasm Hornet WOW has generated,” says Beth Lesen, associate vice president of Student Engagement and Success. “So many people have come together to make the start of this academic year special. Hornet WOW is about saying to our students, even those just joining us: ‘Welcome home.’ ”

Hornet WOW was spearheaded by Student Engagement and Success, which includes Housing and Residential Life; Student Organizations and Leadership; the Academic Advising and Career Center; Associated Students Inc.; the Multi-Cultural, Women’s Resource and PRIDE centers; and Student Conduct and Services to Students with Disabilities. The three-week program was planned and implemented by Student Engagement and Success, in partnership with Hornet Athletics, University Union, The WELL, the Parents and Families Program, and Upper Eastside Lofts.
