When it comes to Sacramento State and its perennial pigskin rival UC Davis, the more blood we see, the happier we are. Of course, we’re talking about the annual Causeway Classic Blood Drive & Bone Marrow Registry.
Sac State’s sixth annual fall blood drive will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 22-23, in the University Union Ballroom. BloodSource is partnering with Associated Students Inc. (ASI) to put on the two-day event. Everyone who registers will receive a T-shirt and earn MyBloodSource rewards points. Prize drawings will be held both days.
Students, faculty, staff and alumni also can register at any BloodSource center or mobile blood location between Oct. 22 and Nov. 6 – and use the code L029 to have it count toward Sacramento State’s total.
Sac State is going for its third consecutive win over UC Davis after registering 1,800 donors in 2011 and 1,774 donors in 2012. The 2013 champion will claim the traveling BloodSource trophy during the 60th Causeway Classic football game Nov. 23 at Hornet Stadium.
Anthony Gibson, 20, joined the bone marrow registry at Sac State’s Causeway Classic Blood Drive two years ago. He recently underwent a procedure to give potentially lifesaving marrow to an 18-year-old man with acute lymphoid leukemia.
“I’m very happy that I did it,” Gibson says. “I was the only option for that family, and I’ll probably never find out what happened to him, but for every good thing that has graced my life, who am I not to go through a little discomfort to help someone?”
