Sacramento State announced today the appointment of James Prince as vice provost for Academic Affairs, effective Monday, Aug. 4.
Prince currently serves as associate dean of the College of Natural Sciences at California State University, Chico, and previously served as interim associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at California State University, Fresno. He has served in the CSU system for a combined 19 years at the two institutions, and also served as a professor and department chair. In addition to his administrative experience, he has extensive experience in teaching and scholarly research.
In a message to the campus community, Provost Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen said, “Since joining the California State University system, Dr. Prince has served in various leadership roles, established a prolific scholarly record and won funding for multimillion-dollar grant-funded projects. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Prince to Sacramento State later this summer.”
Prince earned his bachelor’s degree in botany at UC Davis and his doctorate in plant molecular biology at Cornell University.
The vice provost is part of Harmsen’s academic leadership team, performs the duties of the provost in her absence and is the principal academic officer for matters of academic program planning, educational policy, curriculum review and space allocation.
In coordination with Student Affairs, college deans and department chairs, the vice provost provides leadership in campus efforts to maintain graduate and undergraduate programs of the highest quality, and to develop and improve programs that support student success and progress to graduation.
