Sac State's Office of Water Programs has established itself as a resource for students, the state and the world. The office was established in 1968, when operators of wastewater treatment plants asked a civil engineering professor to write a how-to manual for them. Today, OWP is the world leader in producing home-study materials on water- and wastewater-treatment techniques. In 1999, OWP added a research division that now boasts more than $20 million in contract work. And currently, a group of engineering graduate students working with the program is experimenting with bioretention filters to clean polluted stormwater before it flows into rivers and streams.
