Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson concluded one phase of the city's For Arts' Sake project and kicked off the next step during a May 27 meeting and celebration at Sacramento State.
The University has been an enthusiastic participant in Johnson's year-long effort to create more awareness in the local arts scene and generate more support for artistic endeavors.
During the gathering in Sacramento State's University Theatre, Johnson unveiled an action plan for local arts.
Hundreds of artists, galleries, dance troupes, museums, musicians, actors and all of their supporters spent the last 12 months exploring methods to redefine the arts scene. The four-year action plan includes proposals to increase funding and education, and tactics to expand public participation.
The gathering was a celebration of the arts and a prime example of the local artistic scene. Sacramento State dance students performed for the crowd and alumnus Mark S. Allen, co-host of "Good Day Sacramento" was emcee.
There were performances by musician Jackie Greene, street poetry by Sacramento SAYS, Sacramento Poet Laureate Bob Stanley, and artist/performer David Garibaldi.
