Rock climbing, cooking demonstrations, indoor soccer and other activities will highlight the unveiling of Sacramento State's new recreation and wellness center during a day-long celebration beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.

The WELL - Wellness, Education, Leisure, Lifestyle - combines health and fitness under one roof and in one program. Health offerings include primary and urgent care clinics, a pharmacy, retail optometry and a nutrition center. Recreation and fitness opportunities include four basketball courts, four racquetball courts, cardio-weight training, bouldering and rock-climbing walls.

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez heads a roster of guest speakers who will welcome participants at 9 a.m. for opening remarks. Starting at 10, the day is turned over to a celebration of the new center with events running until 7 p.m.

The day's theme of "Celebrate, educate, dedicate, participate," will be reinforced with tours of the WELL highlighting all areas of the facility and include demonstrations of many of its features. Outside, participants will be treated to displays of martial arts, dance and other activities.

Festivities conclude at 6:30 p.m. with the world's largest dodgeball game for students, faculty and staff.

The opening of the 151,000-square-foot facility is part of the University's Destination 2010 celebration, a year-long observance of the initiative that has enhanced Sacramento State's academic programs, student support services and facilities since its launch in 2004 by President Gonzalez.

"When The Well is combined with the unprecedented number of students we now have living on campus, the result will be transformational for Sacramento State," says Gonzalez. "Students can live here, study here and succeed here without ever leaving campus."

Lead architect Hornberger + Worstell and associate architect Ellerbe Becket, Inc., were partners in the WELL's design. McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was the construction manager at risk and general contractor, and Tony Moayed Construction Services, Inc. was the construction manager and inspector of record.

The Center's design and construction reinforces the integrated mission of the facility and is on track to achieve LEED Silver Certification for its energy-savings features.

The entrance atrium has a 40-foot wide skylight made of a thermo-plastic material that helps regulate building temperature. At night, the atrium will emanate a soft light, serving as a beacon for the campus.

The WELL was paid for with a student fee approved by the students in a campus-wide referendum. No state funds were used. The facility will be available to current students, faculty and staff, as well as the recent alumni who paid the fee but graduated before the building's completion.
