Sac State to receive sustainable business of the year award

Sacramento State will receive the 2010 Sacramento Sustainable Business of the Year Award by the Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC).

Sacramento State has been awarded the 2010 Sacramento Sustainable Business of the Year Award by the Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC). The award is based on the University’s contributions to sustainability and pollution prevention in the community, and for voluntarily exceeding environmental regulatory requirements for the American River Courtyard student residence hall, and for partnering with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in the Smart Grid project.

The fourth annual Sustainable Business of the Year Awards Ceremony and Pollution Prevention Expo is Friday, Oct. 8. The event will be held at the SMUD headquarters at 6301 S. St., starting 8 a.m. Congresswoman Doris Matsui is scheduled to speak and present the award.

“I applaud Sacramento State for their energy efficiency upgrades to their new American River Courtyard student housing facility,” Congresswoman Matsui said. “Energy efficiency upgrades allow Sacramento State to save money on their utility bill, reduce the strain on our energy grid and  improve the environment through greenhouse gas emission reductions.”

BERC commends Sac State for several efficiency upgrades in the new student housing facility that exceeds state-mandated requirements by more than 34.8 percent. Consequently, the campus will reduce its energy consumption by more than 555,000 kilowatt-hours per year for an approximate annual savings of $44,273. Moreover, the annual emissions reduction of more than 607,000 pounds of CO2 associated with this project is equivalent to removing 43-plus passenger cars from the roadways.

The ceremony acknowledges the 2010 Sacramento Sustainable Businesses at the annual Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Awards Expo. BERC promotes business success and the environment and honors those businesses whose sustainability efforts have demonstrated environmental excellence and leadership in the community.

Sac State’s award comes on the heels of the University being honored by the California Sacramento Environmental Commission for exceeding state regulatory requirements in its American River Courtyard facility.

Sac State won this year’s Best Practice Award for Overall Sustainable Design category sponsored by the California State University, University of California and California Community Colleges Energy Efficiency Partnership Program.

In 2009, Sac State won the New Public Project Award sponsored by the Sacramento Business Journal, for energy efficiency and student involvement.

The University also received $74,331 via SMUD’s Savings by Design Program for energy efficiency.
