Alumni Profile: David Bugatto

David Bugatto

David Bugatto is a third-generation Sacramentan and a Sacramento State graduate who wishes there had been an honors program when he was pursuing his degree two decades ago.

Bugatto believes the international emphasis in honors will position these bright young men and women to excel in the global marketplace.

As president and CEO of Alleghany Properties LLC, Bugatto credits Sacramento State for giving him the solid foundation to become a successful businessman. The company specializes in acquiring and developing properties and maximizing the return on investment.

Bugatto’s prime goals as head of the Honors Advisory Board are to put the program on a sound financial footing and increase its public profile. That includes generating private funds that can be used for student scholarships, helping cover the cost of studying abroad and protecting the program from being decimated by severe budget cuts throughout the CSU system

He believes that once private and public entities become more aware of these perceptive students, the better the chances of their landing internships that can lead to lucrative professions. That was certainly the case with him as he worked for the city in environmental planning and then parlayed that opportunity to get into the real-estate division of a bank.

Determined to graduate in four years, Bugatto sat on the floor of a full business class for several weeks during the summer session. The bemused professor relented and the 21-year-old got his degree as well as the banking job. After Alleghany bought the bank, he was managing its problem assets. Several years later he was running the Sacramento subsidiary.

He’s no less determined to see his alma mater’s Honors Program flourish.
