Sacramento State’s Jazz Band is heading back to nationwide competition in Monterey for the fifth year in a row, and local residents can get a preview of that performance with a special fundraising concert on Sunday, March 20.
The Monterey Jazz Next Generation Festival, April 1-3, invites six competitors each in various divisions, covering high school and college jazz groups from across the country. At the competition’s conclusion, the top group in each category is invited to play at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival, Sept. 16-18. Sac State will compete in the Big Band Category, says Steve Roach, the University’s director of jazz programs.
“With various clinics, workshops and jam sessions scheduled throughout the entire weekend, our students are exposed to some of the best jazz performers and educators in the business,” says Roach.
Davis Senior High School’s jazz band was selected to compete in the high school division and will join the Sac State musicians for a friendly battle of the bands at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at the Brunelle Performance Hall on the Davis campus, 315 W. 14th St., Davis. A donation of $8 general admission and $6 for students and seniors will be requested at the door.
“Attending this festival is without a doubt the highlight of our entire year,” Roach says. “It’s truly an honor to be selected as one of six college jazz ensembles to perform and compete.”
