Sac State Theatre is planning Christmas now

06-20-2011

Tim Stewart and Amanda Morish share some Christmas cheer as they look ahead to Sac State’s “A Broadway Christmas” in December. Auditions are Sept. 10 and 17 and open to the community.
If you’re a singer or dancer in the Sacramento region, it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas. Sacramento State’s Theatre and Dance Department will present “A Broadway Christmas” Dec. 7-11 and is looking for entertainers from throughout the community to help present this holiday extravaganza.

Director and Professor Ed Brazo describes the production as similar to what Radio City Music Hall might present during the holiday season, complete with its own version of the Rockettes. It will also feature a full chorus, and Brazo envisions the chorus singing from the back of the theater while the stage is used for visual interpretations of their numbers.

“Vocal director Chris Schlagel and I are pulling out every piece of Christmas music we can find,” Brazo says.

While Sac State Theatre and Dance students will fill many of the featured roles, Brazo is turning to the community for more participants, such as Santa Claus, singers and dancers, even roller-bladers who will portray ice skaters.

Auditions for community members will be held at the University Theatre on Sept. 10 and 17, 10 a.m.-noon for singers, and noon-2 p.m. for roller-bladers, dancers and tap dancers. Singers should come with a prepared song and sheet music in the proper key for the pianist. It doesn’t matter what style of song, classical or popular.

And it doesn’t matter how old or young you are.

“We’re looking for all ages,” Brazo says, adding he’s particularly interested in young “tappers” between the ages of 8 and 12 to portray Santa’s elves and perform in numbers such as the “March of the Wooden Soldiers.”

The first cast meeting would be held just before Halloween and community member rehearsals would be held on weekends.
