Sacramento State’s young actors and dancers are already at work on plays, musicals and dance concerts as the University’s Theatre and Dance Department gets ready for Fall 2011.

The season kicks off with Dance House, a riveting mix of dance works and styles designed to inspire. The concert, which runs at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7-8, 8 p.m. Sept. 9-10 and 2 p.m. Sept. 11 in Dancespace, Solano Hall 1010, features new original works by students, selected alumni and special guests, and is directed by Theatre and Dance Professor Lorelei Bayne.

On the University Theatre main stage, the annual production Dance Sites 2011: Faculty Dance Concert will feature Sac State’s talented dance students performing works choreographed by Theatre and Dance faculty and professional guest choreographers. Styles range from tap to contemporary to Mexican folkloric. Performances are at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26-27, 8 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and 2 p.m. Oct. 30. The concert is directed by Bayne and department Chair Linda Goodrich.

A group of actors, writers and artists gathers at a Russian estate in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, which will be staged in Playwrights’ Theatre at 8 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 12, 18 and 19; 2 p.m. Nov. 13 and 20; and 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16-17. The play examines the group’s romantic entanglements and regrets, painting a rich and tumultuous portrait of the human heart. The result is both tragedy and comedy, sometimes in the same instant. Sacramento State’s production will be directed by Theatre and Dance Professor Michelle Felten.

Mix the Great White Way and Sacramento, add some tapping toy soldiers, dancing, caroling and ice skating, and top off with Sac State’s own version of the Rockettes. The result is A Broadway Christmas!, the University’s holiday extravaganza. Director and Theatre and Dance Professor Ed Brazo is crafting a Christmas spectacular the whole family will enjoy. Audiences can take a “sleigh ride” to performances in the University Theatre at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7-8, 8 p.m. Dec. 9-10 and 2 p.m. Dec. 10-11.

Tickets range from $5 to $12 for dance concerts and The Seagull. Tickets for A Broadway Christmas! are $7-$15. All tickets are available at the Sacramento State Ticket Office, (916) 278-4323 or For more details or information about the Theatre and Dance Department, visit or call (916) 278-6368.
