Michael R. Lemov will discuss his new book about late Congressman John Moss during a free presentation at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Sacramento State’s Library Gallery.
Lemov was chief counsel and special counsel to Moss’ House Commerce Subcommittees for eight years. He also served as general counsel of the National Commission on Product Safety.
"People’s Warrior: John Moss and the Fight for Freedom of Information and Consumer Rights" looks at Moss’ life and work, and at the decades in which he rose to national prominence. Moss was the author of the Freedom of Information Act and the Consumer Product Safety Act, in addition to other landmark federal legislation regarding automobile safety and investor protection, He was called “the man who reinvented oversight” by the Washington Post when he retired in 1979.
Moss donated all his papers to the University Library, where Lemov did much of his research for the book. “The book would not have been possible without the commitment of your University and the dedication of the Archives staff,” Lemov wrote in a letter to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Joseph Sheley.
Lemov was later a partner at Winston and Strawn in Washington and the author of articles on product safety, administrative law and the Freedom of Information Act, as well as a book on the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He is a former deputy general counsel, Office of Compliance, U.S. Congress; Chief Counsel to the House Oversight Subcommittee, which was chaired by Moss 1975-77, and Special Counsel to Moss’s Consumer Protection Subcommittee 1970-75.
