Update, 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20: Please contact Sacramento State’s Department of Public Safety at (916) 278-8477 with any information regarding the fires at Mendocino and Mariposa halls on Oct. 13.

Relevant information includes:

  • Any observations of suspicious activities on or around Oct. 13.
  • Anything that may lead to the identification of the person(s) responsible for the fires, including names of people who may have knowledge about those responsible party(s).
  • Any suspicious person(s) seen the day of, or the days surrounding, the fires.


The Sacramento State Public Safety department appreciates the campus community’s support with this investigation.

A campus tip line has been established at (916) 278-8477. Callers may remain anonymous.




Update, 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16: Here is the updated status of the two campus buildings where fires occurred on Thursday at Sacramento State.

Mendocino Hall will be open, all floors, beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17. Classes will continue as scheduled.

Mariposa Hall’s floors one, two, three and five will be open on Monday. Classes will continue as scheduled on those floors.

The fourth floor of Mariposa Hall will be open except for Suite 4000, which will continue to be closed while crews clean up and assess the damage. Students who have classes in Suite 4000 can expect to receive an email on their SacSend accounts from their respective professors regarding classroom contingency plans.

Cal Fire is continuing its investigation of the cause of the fires.

Update, 4:35 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14: After two fires, Sacramento State's Mendocino and Mariposa halls will be cleaned throughout the weekend. They are scheduled to open Monday with the exception of the fourth floor of Mariposa Hall, which will remain closed until further notice.

Cal Fire is continuing to investigate.

Cleanup crews will be using an airflow system with charcoal filters in both buildings to remove the smoky odor.

Fifth-floor ceiling tiles and drywall in Mendocino Hall will be tested for asbestos as a precaution. Badly discolored tiles will be removed.

The Family and Consumer Sciences kitchen and another room on Mariposa Hall's third floor have water damage and soot. Crews are continuing to clean hallways and nearly every office on the fourth floor.

Sacramento State officials will provide an update later regarding Mariposa's fourth floor as well as any further information.

The home economics kitchen and another room on Mariposa Hall’s third floor have water damage and soot. The hallways and nearly every office on the fourth floor need to be cleaned.

Sacramento State officials are scheduled to meet today at 4 p.m. to assess the situation.

Update, 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13: Here is the latest information on plans for Friday at Mariposa Hall and Mendocino Hall.

Mariposa Hall: The building is closed for cleanup. Friday classes in Mariposa Hall have been canceled.
Faculty and staff of the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies who work in Mariposa Hall should report to their respective dean’s offices at normal times for instructions.

Faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Letters who work in Mariposa Hall should report to Nicholas F. Burnett, Interim Associate Dean, at the front (East) entrance to Mariposa starting at 8 a.m. for instructions.

Mendocino Hall: All classes will be held as scheduled Friday. Floors 1-4 of Mendocino will have normal operations.The fifth floor of Mendocino Hall will be closed for cleanup. Faculty and staff who work on the fifth floor should report to Kimo Ah Yun, chair of the Communication Studies Department, to retrieve their belongings and receive work instructions.

Personal belongings: For those students, staff, or faculty who may have left personal property in Mariposa Hall, starting at 8 a.m., you may come to the front (East) entrance of Mariposa and you will be escorted into the building to retrieve your belongings.

For Mendocino Hall, Floors 1-4 will be open. Access to the fifth floor will be controlled with access available through the southeast entrance.  You will be escorted to retrieve your belongings.

Please bring a photo ID or be prepared to show one once you retrieve your belongings.

Update: 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13: Fire officials extinguished three fires on campus Thursday afternoon. There were no reported injuries.

The first report, on the fifth floor of Mendocino Hall, was received at 2:58 p.m. It apparently involved a piece of furniture and was put out quickly. No injuries were reported, although fire crews did rescue one person from the fifth floor.

University Police received a report of a second fire, on the fourth floor of Mariposa Hall. Fire crews put out that fire and cleared heavy smoke from the building.

A third fire was extinguished in a trash can near the tennis courts.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the fires, and there is no official cause.

Classes in Mendocino Hall and Mariposa Hall have been canceled for the rest of the evening. Both buildings are closed until at least 8 a.m. Friday.

University Police have called in additional officers for Thursday night patrols, with a heavier presence especially around the residence halls.

Anyone with information about Thursday’s fires is asked to call University Police at 278-6851. We will provide updates as more information is available.

Mariposa Hall belongings

Update, 6:20 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13: Information on how to pick up student belongings left in Mariposa Hall during today's fire evacuation will be available soon.

Initial report, 4:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13:

Fire officials have confirmed reports of two fires on campus this afternoon. The first was reported in Mendocino Hall. It appeared to involve a piece of furniture and has been extinguished. Fire crews rescued one person who was trapped on the fifth floor. There were no reported injuries.

Sacramento State police received a report of a second fire, on the fourth floor of Mariposa Hall. Fire crews responded, and initial reports are that the second fire was contained. There are no reports of injuries in this incident.

At this time, fire crews are not permitting anyone to return to the two buildings. Classes in Mendocino and Mariposa halls have been canceled for the rest of the evening.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is en route to investigate.
