Ed Mills, Sacramento State’s associate vice president for Student Affairs, Enrollment and Student Support, is making a difference for students, and they’re the first to agree. Members of the California State Student Association (CSSA) — the independent, nonprofit student organization governed by representatives from each of the 23 California State University campuses — have voted him Administrator of the Year.

“This honor reflects Mills’ exceptional commitment to students,” says Vice President for Student Affairs Lori Varlotta. “He’s worked tirelessly to maintain access to Sacramento State to as many students as possible, even in financially challenging times.”

Mills is continually seeking ways to help students and parents navigate the college admission, financial aid and registration processes. And he makes sure to maintain an individual, personal connection with students. Students are a common sight in his office as he helps them sort out special enrollment challenges, and each fall he teaches a freshman seminar helping new students successfully transition to university life. His energetic and welcoming presence at new-student orientation sessions emphasizes the personal touch that is a Sacramento State hallmark.

Sacramento State CSSA student representative Vance Jarrard and Associated Students Inc. President Laura Gonzalez, who nominated Mills for the award, are impressed by the time he makes for students among his myriad other duties. “Ed goes above and beyond his job requirements for the benefit of students, and I know that there are plenty of students on this campus that are thankful to have him working for our benefit,” Jarrard says.

Mills’ other responsibilities include overseeing Admissions & Outreach, New Student Orientation, the Financial Aid Office, the University Registrar's Office, Academic Advising, Career Services, the Veterans Service Center, Global Education and the Student Athlete Resource Center — all programs and services that place Mills’ focus on student success, retention, and graduation front and center.
