Lecture's focus is stem cells, embryo development

The next presentation in Sacramento State’s STEM Topics in Regenerative Medicine Lecture Series, “Stem Cells and Fertility,” is from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the University Union Ballroom. Dr. Renee Reijo Pera will address new research using stem cells as models to study human embryo and germ cell development.

As director of the Center for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research and Education, and the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Stanford University, Reijo Pera has identified how cell fate decisions are made in the embryo and how programming and reprogramming occurs in the early embryo. She also delineates how the germ cell lineage gives rise to eggs and sperm and its importance in our understanding of embryo development. Such studies further the understanding of human reproductive failure, one of the most common health problems in men and women and a common cause of birth defects.

Reijo Pera’s honors include the American Stem Cell Research Foundation Award, Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award, and American Society for Reproductive Medicine Bruce Stewart Award. She was cited by Newsweek magazine as one of the nation’s 20 influential women for her work.

Presented by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Center for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Excellence, the Topics in Regenerative Medicine lectures are funded through a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) grant in collaboration with the UC Davis Stem Cell Program.
