From the loss of a loved one to the exploration of outer space, Sacramento State’s dance students explore a wide range of experiences and emotions in “Coming Out of the Air Vents: Senior Dance Concert 2013.”

The concert is the culminating choreographic experience for dance majors and selective minors as they put their finals on stage for all to see.

Performances are in Solano Hall Dancespace at 6:30 p.m. May 9, 15 and 16; 8 p.m. May 10, 11, 17 and 18; and 2 p.m. May 12 and 19.

“Coming Out of the Air Vents” comprises 34 student and alumni dancers, choreographed by eight senior dance students. Music for the pieces includes a new composition by Sac State student composer Nick Micheels, along with music from the Kronos Quartet, to Explosions in the Sky, to spoken text, and more.

“The concert illustrates the breadth of talent of our students as dancers, choreographers, authors and composers,” says Professor Philip Flickinger, the concert’s director.

Diego Campos’ piece is titled “When the Voice Meets the Echo,” an interpretation of how people communicate with each other today, through means such as Facebook and texting. “We don’t really appreciate the time we have to communicate face to face,” he says.

The piece is set to “a1” by Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds and features seven dancers.

“I Remember When People Fell Away,” features five dancers and is set to “First Breath After Coma,” by Explosions in the Sky. Choreographer Cameron Lucas Eggers says it is about the process people go through after experiencing a loss – picking themselves up and becoming confident and independent again.

Tickets for the May 15 and 16 performances are $8 general admission and $5 for children. All other performances are $12 general, $10 for seniors and students, and $8 for children. Tickets are available at the University Ticket Office, 278-4323 or
