Aguilar will be leaving his job as an analyst for the California Educational Facilities Authority in the State Treasurer’s Office. He previously was a coordinator for state education partnerships with the ScholarShare Investment Board. Aguilar also is an alumnus of the Executive Fellowship program, serving as a fellow in the State Treasurer’s Office in 2007-08.

Before going to work for the state government, Aguilar was the assistant director of the Upward Bound Program at Stanford University. He is a graduate of Occidental College, has a master’s in multicultural education from Sacramento State and is completing a doctorate in education at UC Davis.

“As a graduate of the master’s program in multicultural education and a former Executive Fellow, I wanted to help other students have as great a learning experience as I had in both programs,” Aguilar says.

As the deputy director of the Center for California Studies, Aguilar will coordinate all four of the Fellows programs, which are graduate-level fellowships placing participants in the Senate, Assembly, Executive and Judicial branches of state government. For the past three years, the programs have been listed among the nation’s top 10 internship programs by Vault.com, a website that profiles and ranks employers, and provides industry blogs and education information.

Aguilar also will assist in guiding the center’s broader mission to strengthen democratic governance in California.

“I believe the Center is uniquely positioned to advance both learning and leadership in California,” he says. “It’s an exciting time to work for the Center and for Sacramento State.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have Brian joining the Center,” says Center Executive Director Steve Boilard. “As a former Executive fellow he knows firsthand how the program works, and as an alumnus he is familiar with our university setting and connected with the academic side of the Center.”
