‘Etiquette dinner’ for students is Nov. 6

Students at Etiquette Dinner

Good table manners will impress a potential employer as much as a good résumé. It’s not uncommon these days for a job interview to take place at a restaurant.

Sacramento State’s Academic Advising and Career Center will host “A Taste of Etiquette” on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to prepare students for the eventuality of sitting through a job interview – or, once hired, business meetings with the boss or clients – during a meal.

“A Taste of Etiquette” runs 5-8 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom. Tickets are $12. As many as 150 Sac State students are expected to attend the four-course sit-down dinner.

The meal will begin with an appetizer of cheese and fruit, followed by a green salad. The entrée is chicken breast dressed with a Marsala wine sauce and served with garlic mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. And, for dessert, they’ll have dark chocolate cake and coffee.

While the students dine, professional etiquette expert Gina Snyder will advise them on everything from which fork to use and the appropriate small talk for a business situation, to tips on successful networking.

“This event teaches students the rules of behavior in a business or formal setting,” says Shayla Walker, a Sac State career counselor and academic adviser. “In addition, they learn how to polish their social and networking skills.”

Representatives of the rental-car company Enterprise, the accounting firm Moss Adams LLP and the Wine Group will be on hand to talk with the students.
