Sacramento State is reaching out to former Heald College students who are struggling to pick up the pieces of their education following the closure of their campuses by Heald’s parent organization, Corinthian Colleges. Representatives from Sac State’s Admissions and Outreach Department will hold two workshops for the students: one Wednesday June 10, the other Wednesday, June 17. Both are from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Lassen Hall 1100 Welcome Center.

Corinthian was a for-profit college system hit with a number of financial setbacks. Last month, it closed 28 Western campuses, displacing 16,000 students, including those at a campus in Roseville and another in Rancho Cordova.

Those students – many saddled with large college loans – are searching for other options, and Sac State just might be one of them.

“We want to help them understand whether the coursework they have taken works here,” says Emiliano Diaz, Sac State’s director of Admissions and Outreach. “There are some Heald courses the CSU system does honor and articulate.”

The key to that, he says, is reviewing each student’s transcripts to see what might still be needed to transfer to Sac State or another CSU. “We need to see what courses they took, find out how close they are to transferring. And then talk a little bit about next steps.”

The meeting will include a talk by Sac State Admissions representatives in general about the courses that are approved for transfer to a CSU. They’ll also discuss the process of transferring, whether it be for a fall term or spring term, and what they can work on prior to enrolling.

“We’ll talk very generally about that, and that will be followed by one-on-one meetings with counselors,” Diaz says.

Representatives also will answer general questions about the students’ financial situations and aid that might be available. And students are reminded to bring their unofficial transcripts.
