Nursing professor's lifesaving study is the topic of lecture

Some of Professor Dian Baker's patients at Sutter General Hospital were mysteriously contracting pneumonia. Baker, a Sacramento State nurse-researcher, teamed with a Sutter nurse to find out why. The result surprised them: poor dental hygiene. Turns out that was the culprit in many cases of nonventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP), the consequences of which most nurses were unaware. Baker, coordinator of Sac State's School Nurse Program, will discuss the groundbreaking study and its lifesaving results at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the University's first fall STEM Lecture.
