The Student-Athlete Resource Center (SARC) provides Division I student-athletes with the support to develop as independent and successful young adults and the skills to achieve their academic goals, to persist towards graduation, and to meet all NCAA eligibility requirements. SARC offers admissions counseling, academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules compliance and eligibility education, financial services support, and life skills programming to all of Sacramento State’s Division I athletes. SARC’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways, including: individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education workshops, freshmen seminar classes, and various student development and academic workshops.
Paul Edwards, Director
Paul was selected as the inaugural Director of the Student-Athlete Resource Center in March 2006. Prior to this he had served as the Coordinator of the Athletic Advising Program since 1992. Over the past two decades Paul has been involved in the academic support of Sac State student-athletes and has played key roles in helping the institution make the transition into Division I athletics. He holds his bachelor's degree in Business Administration and his Master's in Educational Administration. Paul previously served as an academic assistant and peer advisor in several campus departments including EOP/Academic Achievement Center, the Academic Advising Center, the New Student Orientation Program, and Intercollegiate Athletics. He also worked in Admissions and Records during his time as an undergraduate. A native of northern California, Paul is a two-time graduate of Sacramento State. He comes from a family dedicated to higher education at Sac State. His father, Tom, was a former associate dean; his mother, Cheryl, worked in Library Circulations; and his sister, Stephanie, was an assistant in Admissions and Records. The Edwards family has had a presence on campus since 1964, with all four receiving degrees from Sacramento State. Paul is married to a fellow Sac State graduate and elementary teacher, Susie, and has two boys, Tommy and Tyler.
Laurie Dahlberg, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Academic Advising & Continuing Eligibility
Laurie is responsible for providing comprehensive, professional academic advising and instructional support services to help ensure the academic success, retention and athletics eligibility of more than 450 student-athletes in all 21 varsity sports programs. She is also directly responsible for several programs including: 5th year scholarships; Athletic Summer school scholarships; the NCAA 6th year degree-completion scholarship; and the Academic Progress Report (APR) system. Laurie earned two degrees from Sacramento State: a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies (1992) and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Policy Studies (1998). While attending Sac State, she was a four year letterman in softball. After completing her BA, Laurie entered the private sector before deciding to return for her master's. While a graduate student, she began working in the former Athletic Advising Program where she advised student-athletes about academics and NCAA eligbility. She was hired as a full-time counselor in January 1998. Laurie and her husband, Tom, have two sons (Sean and Bryce).
Mark McGushin, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development, Admissions & Initial Eligibility
Mark has been with Sacramento State since 1997. Before becoming Life Skills Coordinator in 2002, Mark was the University's first full-time Compliance Coordinator. Mark earned his B.S. in Human Performance and M.A. in Sport Management from San Jose State University. Prior to coming to Sac State, Mark was a Compliance and Academic Advising Assistant at SJSU. Mark has also been an assistant coach at the collegiate level (baseball, women's tennis and women's water polo) and high school level (baseball and football). Mark oversees the university's NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) which strives to help student-athletes achieve Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and a Commitment to Community Service. In addition to coordinating the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, Mark provides advising support for student-athletes that exhibit additional academic needs.
Bob Shook, Football Retention Coordinator and Advisor
Bob Shook comes to Sacramento State from Cal State Bakersfield where he was hired to implement the athletic academic advising program as CSUB began their reclassification process from NCAA Division II to Division I. He later served as the Athletic Compliance Coordinator at CSUB during his three year stay from 2006-2008. Bob has more than 30 years experience as a football coach and academic advisor/counselor at the high school, community college, and university levels. His career began in 1971, but his Division I advising experience started at Fresno State in 1993 where he served as the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Services. He then took a break from advising to get back into coaching and spent eight years at Sacramento State as an assistant football coach from 1995-2003. He then returned to Fresno State 2003-2006 for a second stint as the Academic Advisor for Football, Baseball, and Women's Basketball and Life Skills Coordinator. The SARC is happy to have Bob back as a Hornet! A native of San Diego, CA, Bob graduated with his Bachelor's from UC Riverside where he played two seasons of football. He went on to earn Master's Degrees in Kinesiology (University of Eastern Washington) and Counseling (Washington State University). Bob is happily married to Jane and they enjoy living in Folsom, CA.
Bethany Crouch, Student-Athlete Development and Success Coordinator
Bethany is responsible for overseeing the University's NCAA Life Skills Program which strives to help student-athletes achieve Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and a Commitment to Community Service. In addition to coordinating this program, she will also assist in general advising, admissions and initial eligibility of all student-athletes. Bethany has been on campus since the fall of 2008, as she was a valuable member of our gymnastics program. She graduated with a Communication Studies degree and a double minor (Coaching and Marketing) in 2013 and earned her MA in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco in 2015. While in graduate school, Bethany worked in many different areas within Hornet Athletics, from the Ticketing Office to Development. She joins the SARC team with a variety of higher education job experiences that will serve her well in this position. Bethany met her husband Aaron (a former Hornet baseball player) while attending Freshman Orientation which proves that orientation can be life changing!
Jean Estevez, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance
As Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Jean Estevez is responsible for monitoring, providing interpretive assistance, and developing rules education. She joined the SARC in June of 2015 as the Assistant Athletic Compliance Director. Prior to her appointment, she served as Compliance Coordinator at The Ohio State University and was the Compliance Postgraduate Intern at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Jean received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 2009, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Political Science with a minor in Spanish. She received her law degree from Stetson University College of Law in 2012 and is a member of the State Bar of Illinois. Jean currently resides in Sacramento with her husband, Carlos.
Renee Dubuc, Director of Compliance
Chris Chavez, Interim Assistant Director of Compliance
As Interim Assistant Director of Compliance, Chris works with the NCAA rules and regulations for all student-athletes, coaches, staff, boosters and fans. Chris has worked at Sac State for the past 7 years as a Student-Athlete Academic Mentor in the SARC, helping student-athletes adjust to being a college athlete by teaching them time management, organization, and the necessary study skills in order to become a successful student-athlete. During that time, Chris also was a Volunteer Assistant with the Sac State Football team where he helped film practice, worked closely with the defensive coaching staff, and assisted the Director of Football Operations. Originally from Saratoga, California, Chris graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in History (2009) and earned his Master's Degree in Higher Education from Drexel University-Sacramento (2013).
