Foreign Language Graduation Requirement Changes

All students whose catalog is Fall 1992 or later are required to meet a foreign language requirement for the baccalaureate degree.* The policy requires proficiency to be demonstrated at a level comparable to the second semester of college level language, including American Sign Language (ASL).

I. BEFORE YOU ENROLL AT SAC STATE

The foreign language requirement may be met by any one of the following:

 
A.

 
Completion of the third year of a foreign language in high school (grade of “C-” or better).

B.

Graduation from a secondary school where the language of instruction was not English.

C.

Advanced Placement Foreign Language Examination scores of 3, 4 or 5.

  D. Completion of two semesters of a foreign language at a community college or university, with a grade of "C-" or better.

Students will be required to submit official high school or college transcripts or other admissions documents to verify the completion of this requirement.

 

II. AFTER YOU ENROLL AT SAC STATE

  If the language requirement has not been completed through one of the above options, students must meet the Sac State foreign language graduation requirement by completing one of the following options:
  A. Passing intermediate-level tests in two of four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. One of the tests passed must be in reading or writing.
   

 

Proficiency tests are given as follows:

 
Fall
Spring
Time of Exam
Cantonese September 30, 2005 February 24, 2006 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
French and German September 30, 2005 February 24, 2006 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Spanish November 4, 2005 March 24, 2006 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

For Cantonese, French and German: Students must sign up in the Department of Foreign Languages (MRP-2051) by Friday, September 23, 2005, for the Fall semester tests and February 17, 2006, for the Spring semester tests.

For Spanish: October 28, 2005, for the Fall semester test and by March 17, 2006, for the Spring semester test.

There will be a $5 charge for each test. Call the Department of Foreign Languages (278-6333) for further information.

 

B.

Passing an advanced-level proficiency test in reading. Contact the department of foreign languages (Mariposa 2051) for more information.

  C. Completing the second semester or equivalent (1B) of a college-level language (or ASL) course wiht a grade of "C-" or better.


 


*Note:
Students with language disabilities due to a specific learning disability, or are deaf, hearing or speech impaired, or who have sustained brain injry may, on the recommendation of the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities, satisfy the requirement in oe of several alternative ways.
