Since University requirements change periodically, it is important that you know which set of GE and major requirements apply to you, and what catalog options are available to you.
Freshmen. Students who enter Sacramento State as freshmen use the catalog requirements in effect when they begin at Sacramento State. For example, if you graduated from high school last Spring and began at Sacramento State in the Fall Semester 2011, your catalog rights begin in Fall 2011 and you are required to fulfill the GE and major requirements outlined in the University catalog in effect in Fall 2011. As long as you maintain continuous enrollment (defined below), you will not be responsible for any requirements added after that time. Students also have the option of choosing to meet the catalog requirements in effect when they graduate from Sacramento State.
Transfer Students. Students who transfer to Sacramento State may use (1) the catalog requirements in effect when they enter Sacramento State, (2) the catalog requirements in effect when they graduate from Sacramento State, or (3) the requirements which were in effect when their continuous enrollment (defined below) began. For example, if you began at Sierra College in Fall 2009 and have been continuously enrolled since then, you have catalog rights to Fall 2009.
Continuous Enrollment begins when you have graduated from high school and enroll in either a California State University (such as Sacramento State) or a California Community College (such as American River College). You maintain continuous enrollment as long as you register one semester in each calendar year.
A. A maximum of nine units of coursework from your major department may also be applied to the General Education requirements.
Note: For Social Science majors, substitute “History” for “major department.”
B. There is no restriction on overlap between courses taken for a minor and General Education.

Courses listed in General Education are subject to change, as new courses are approved and others are deleted. Only courses appearing in the "GE Pattern List" in the current online catalog are approved for General Education credit.
Courses taken at Sacramento State on the CR/NC grading option may not be used to satisfy General Education or major requirements.
A. All students who began continuous enrollment in the Fall of 1992 or later are required to meet the foreign language graduation requirement.
B. All students who began continuous enrollment in Fall of 1992 or later must complete a second semester of English composition.
C. All students who began continuous enrollment in the Fall of 1990 or later must complete a course in Race and Ethnicity in American Society, identified in the GE Pattern List by a (+).
D. Students who began continuous enrollment in the Fall of 1988 or later must have at least a 2.0 GPA in General Education courses and grades of at least “C-” in the courses taken to satisfy Categories A1, A2, A3, and B4.
For a definition of continuous enrollment see column on left.
A. Liberal Studies majors: Most General Education requirements are included in the major. Consult a Liberal Studies advisor for specific requirements, LSN Hall 2008, (916) 278-6342.
B. Child Development majors: For majors following the Academic Program with Pre-Credential Preparation, most GE requirements are included in the major. Consult a Child Development advisor for specific requirements, LSN 2008.
C. Engineering and Computer Science majors: Consult the Academic Advising and Career Center, LSN Hall 1013, or your major department.
All students whose catalog is Fall 1992 or later are required to meet a foreign language requirement for the baccalaureate degree. The policy requires proficiency to be demonstrated at a level comparable to the second semester of college level language, including American Sign Language (ASL).
I. BEFORE SAC STATE ENROLLMENT
The foreign language graduation requirement may be met by any one of the following:
A. completion of the third year of a foreign language in high school (grade of “C-” or better);
B. graduation from a secondary school where the language of instruction was not English;
C. advanced Placement Foreign Language Examination scores of 3, 4, or 5;
D. completion of two semesters of a foreign language at a community college or university with a grade of “C-” or better.
Students will be required to submit official high school or college transcripts or other admissions documents to verify the completion of this requirement.
II. AFTER SAC STATE ENROLLMENT
If the language requirement has not been completed through one of the above options, students must meet the Sacramento State foreign language graduation requirement by completing one of the following options.
A. Passing intermediate-level tests in two of four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. One of the tests passed must be in reading or writing.
*** The Proficiency Test for Spanish is given in a group lab setting, and will assess Listening and Reading skills. (The test is given approximately six times a semester, in the Fall and Spring, on Friday afternoons 3-4:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m., and also once a semester in the morning, as shown by test dates/times given below. Students must submit their Test Registration Form to the Department of Foreign Languages, MRP 2051, at least ONE WEEK prior to the test date. There will be a $5 charge for each portion of the test, for a total of $10. Other languages may be tested individually with an Authorized Language Examiner. Read the Foreign Language Department Web page at http://www.csus.edu/fl/proficiency/prof-requirement.htm and use the Authorized Examiner link. Typically speaking and reading are the skills that are assessed.
B. Passing an Advanced-level proficiency test in reading. Meet individually with an Authorized Language Examiner, which you can find on the list at http://www.csus.edu/fl/proficiency/other-language-testing.htm.
C. Completing the second semester or equivalent (1B) of a college-level language (or ASL) course, or any higher level course taught in the language, with a grade of “C-“ or better. For Spanish, completing a Spanish Reading Proficiency course (7) also meets the requirement.
Note: Students with language disabilities due to a specific learning disability, or who are deaf, hearing or speech impaired, or who have sustained brain injury may, on the recommendation of the Director of Services to Students with Disabilities, satisfy the requirement in one of several alternative ways.
All students must take the EPT or document their exemptions before registering in their first semester of classes. This test determines whether you should enroll in ENGL 15 (College Language Skills), ENGL 1 (Basic Writing Skills), ENGL 10 (Academic Literacies I) and ENGL 11 (Academic Literacies II), or ENGL 1A (College Composition). If English is not your first language and you could benefit from instruction for multilingual writers, the EDT, taken at Sacramento State will place you in equivalent multilingual courses:ENGL 86 (College Language Skills for Multilingual Students), ENGL 87 (Basic Writing Skills for Multilingual Students), ENGL 10M (Academic Literacies I - Multilingual) and ENGL 11M (Academic Literacies II-Multilingual), or ENGL 2 (College Composition for Multilingual Students).You must take the EPT before you can enroll in any classes in the University, and you must enroll in your required preparatory classes (ENGL 15, ENGL 1, ENGL 10/11or ENGL 86, ENGL 87, ENGL 10M/11M) in your first semester and complete your preparatory class sequence by the end of your first year at Sacramento State.
To register for the test, go to http://www.csus.edu/testing by the deadline date. Students who need accommodations because of disabilities should get a clearance from the Office of Services to Students with Disabilities, LSN Hall 1008, (916) 278-6955 and submit it with the test registration materials at least a week before the deadline.
Any of the following exempts you from the EPT:
- completion (grade of “C-” or better) of ENGL 1A or its equivalent at another college;
- CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) exemption;
- a score of 470 or above on the Verbal Section of the (SAT) College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (before April 1995);
- a score of 500 or above on the Verbal/Critical Reading Section of the SAT (April 1995 or later);
- a score of 22 or above on the (ACT) American College Testing English Usage Test (before October 1989);
- a score of 24 or above on the (ACTE) Enhanced American College Testing English Usage Test (October 1989 or later);
- a score of 3 or above on the Advanced Placement Language and Composition or Composition and Literature Examination of the College Board Advanced Placement Program
The EPT may be taken at any CSU campus; placement tests taken at other colleges or universities do not apply.
If you qualify for an exemption under any of the provisions above, go to the Student Services Counter, LSN Hall, first floor to arrange documentation.
It is recommended that undergraduate international students and permanent residents take the EDT (1) if they did not take the English Placement Test (EPT) at Sacramento State or (2) if they fulfilled the freshman composition requirement (ENGL 1A) at another campus and would like to self place in the multilingual track. An EDT score is a requirement for registration in any multilingual course: ENGL 85, ENGL 86, ENGL 87, ENGL 10M/11M, ENGL 2, ENGL 20M, or ENGL 109M. All students must complete a first-year writing course (GE Area A2) with a grade of “C-” or better. This requirement can be met by taking a year long sequence, ENGL 10 and 11, or by taking a one-semester accelerated course, ENGL 1A. (This requirement may also be met by completing a course equivalent to ENGL 1A at another college or university.) Multilingual students may meet the same requirement by completing either ENGL 10M and 11M or ENGL 2 with a grade of “C-” or better.
You must take the English Placement Test (EPT), and you may be required to take one or more preparatory courses before enrolling in ENGL 1A or ENGL 2. You should take English 1A/2 immediately after completing your required preparatory courses (ENGL 15/English 1 or ENGL 86/ENGL 87) and no later than the point at which you complete 30 units. Students with catalog rights beginning Fall 1992 and later are required to complete ENGL 20/ENGL 20M (Multilingual), or equivalent, with a grade of “C-” or better after successfully completing ENGL 1A and 30 units.
All CSU students subject to the degree requirements of the 1979-80 and subsequent catalogs must satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) before graduation. Prior to Fall semester 2009, this was done by passing the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) or ENGL 109M/109W. Beginning in Fall semester 2009, the process for completing the GWAR changed.
Beginning Fall semester 2009, undergraduate students now fulfill the GWAR through the two-step placement process outlined below. Students should begin the GWAR placement process once they attain junior standing but before they complete 74 units. Students who do not meet this policy requirement will have registration holds placed on them when they complete 74 units. For more information about the undergraduate-level GWAR requirement, please refer to http://www.al.csus.edu/gwar.
Students will choose to take EITHER the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) timed essay exam OR the ENGL 109M or 109W class (whichever course is most appropriate) to receive their GWAR placement numbers.
Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ)
The standard WPJ exam is a two-hour essay exam (including time for instructions). During the exam, you will be given an hour and 45 minutes to brainstorm (15 minutes) and write two short essays. The first essay (60 minutes) we will give you four or five sources (e.g., newspaper articles, short essays, tables/charts, political cartoons, etc.) to read and think about. You are asked to write a short essay in which you make an argument about a topic arising from those sources. The second essay (30 minutes) will ask you to respond to a specific prompt about either your experiences with writing or your writing process. Essays become the property of the University and will not be returned.
Registration: Registration for each WPJ exam is available online at http://www.csus.edu/testing during a specific two-week period. Late registration for the WPJ will not be accepted.
Students with Disabilities: Students who are registered with the Services to Students with Disabilities (SSWD) office may be eligible to receive testing accommodations for the WPJ. Students should request accommodations through the SSWD office at least one week before the registration deadline, then register for the WPJ online at http://www.csus.edu/testing. For more information about receiving testing accommodations as a student with a disability, please contact the SSWD office in Lassen Hall room 1008 or at (916) 278-6955.
Multilingual Students: Multilingual students who have an English Diagnostic Test (EDT) score of 2-5 are eligible to receive extra time to take the WPJ exam. These students should register online at http://www.csus.edu/testing. For assistance, contact the English Department, CLV Hall 103, (916) 278-6586.
Transfer Students: If you satisfied the GWAR at another CSU campus, go to the English Department located in CLV Hall 103, (916) 278-6409 to see how you can transfer that completed requirement from your previous campus to Sacramento State.
On the Day of the Exam: On the day of the exam you must bring the following:
- check or money order for $25 made out to "Sacramento State" - cash will not be accepted
- two forms of photo I.D. (e.g. Sac State One Card, drivers license, passport, military I.D., etc.)
- several pens and pencils (final draft must be in ink)
- printed dictionary (optional) – thesaurus and electronic dictionaries are not allowed
Make-up Exam: A make-up exam is available after each WPJ exam for students who are not able to attend the day of the exam for religious, academic, medical, or emergency reasons. To qualify for the make-up exam, students must present one of the following to the Testing Center located in Lassen Hall, Room 2302:
- During the online registration period: a written statement on letterhead from your clergy, proof of conflicting exam appointment, a class schedule showing a Saturday course, or a letter from your coach showing a conflicting athletic event.
- By 12pm on the Tuesday following the exam: a doctor’s note or police accident report proving an emergency on the day of the exam.
Students who have other, compelling reasons for missing the exam may submit a written request to take the make-up exam to the English Department in Calaveras Hall, Room 103 by 12pm on the Tuesday following the exam. Once the online registration period for the WPJ closes, make-up requests will only be considered for students who are already registered for the Saturday exam.

ENGL 109M/109W is a writing class designed to review academic reading and writing skills, help you improve upon those skills, and prepare you to be successful in upper-division writing courses. Through the semester you will write and revise several documents about the research and writing methods in your major discipline; you will use these to create a GWAR Portfolio. Your instructor, in consultation with other ENGL 109M/109W instructors, will grade your GWAR Portfolio at the end of the semester using a standardized grading rubric. While the two classes are equivalent, ENGL 109M is meant specifically for multilingual students (students whose first/primary language is not English) and should only be chosen by those students. Students who are not multilingual (students whose first/primary language is English) should choose ENGL 109W.
Prerequisites for ENGL 109M/109W: junior standing (60+ units) and successful completion of ENGL 20 (or the equivalent).
Once students have completed either the WPJ or ENGL 109M/109W, they will be given a GWAR placement number. The GWAR placement number will indicate which course(s) each student will need to complete to fulfill the GWAR requirement. The placement numbers and instructions are as follows:
- 90 - GWAR requirement fulfilled at another CSU campus. No further classes required.
- 80 - Pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-' or higher. (3 units)
- 70 - Pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-' or higher and ENGL 109X concurrently. (4 units)
- 71 - Pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-' or higher and ENGL 109X concurrently. (4 units)
- 60 - Pass ENGL 109W, then pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-" or higher. (6 units)
- 50 - Pass ENGL 109M, then pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-" or higher. (6 units)
- 40 - Pass ENGL 86, then pass ENGL 109M, then pass a Writing Intensive course with a 'C-' or higher. (10 units)
Second Bachelor's Students
Beginning Fall semester 2009, Second Bachelor's students need to follow the two-step GWAR placement process outlined for undergraduate students above with one exception: Second Bachelor's students do not need to pass a Writing Intensive class to fulfill their GWAR requirements. The placement numbers and instructions for Second Bachelor's students are as follows:
- 90 - GWAR requirement fulfilled at another CSU campus. No further classes required.
- 80, 71, 70 - GWAR requirement completed. No further classes required.
- 60 - Pass ENGL 109W
- 50 - Pass ENGL 109M
- 40 - Pass ENGL 86, then pass ENGL 109M
Graduate students who did not complete their graduate-level GWAR requirement prior to Fall 2010 will follow the two-step placement process outlined below. For more information about how a graduate student could complete the graduate-level GWAR requirement prior to Fall 2010 and about the current placement process, please refer to http://www.al.csus.edu/writing/gewritingrequirements/gGwar.php.
Step 1: The first step of the graduate GWAR will assess your writing to determine your readiness for graduate-level writing tasks. Graduate students will choose one of the three options below to complete the first step; students should consult with their graduate program advisors to choose the best option for them. All graduate students must complete the first step of the GWAR requirement before they may advance to candidacy.
Option A: Meet one of the equivalency standards upon entry to the university
If you meet one of the equivalency standards listed below, fill out the waiver form available on the Office of Graduate Studies’ Web site, attach the appropriate accompanying materials, and submit everything according to the instructions on the form.
- Have an M.A./M.S., Ph.D., or J.D. from a US-Accredited University or equivalent degree with coursework in the English language as evaluated by the Office of the Graduate Dean (attach copy of school transcript with degree noted).
- Published a referred first- or single-authored academic journal article in the English language (attach a copy of the journal/publication cover and first page of the article with your name).
- Graduated with a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a US-accredited University with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or above (attach copy of school transcript).
- Received 4.5 or higher on the analytical writing portion of the GRE/GMAT (attach verification).
- Have been Instructor of record of a college-level writing course taught in the English language at a US-accredited University approved by the Office of the Graduate Dean.
Option B: Earn a grade of ‘B’ or higher in a Graduate Writing Intensive (GWI) course in your graduate program
The GWI course will immerse graduate students in the discourse of their academic or professional discipline and prepare graduate students to participate effectively in that discourse. Below is a list of the GWI classes that are currently available. Please note: At this time, not all graduate programs have a GWI course for their students.

Option C: Take the Writing Placement for Graduates (WPG) timed essay exam
The WPG will ask writers to compose two essays, after reading a selection of brief texts, which represent a variety of genres typical in scholarly and professional writing, such as graphs, charts, tables, bullet lists, and scholarly prose. The WPG will be offered by the Writing Programs Office twice each year.

PREPARING FOR THE EXAM: At the end of the online registration process, at the bottom of your registration confirmation page, you will find a link to help you sign up for a GWAR workshop. These workshops are free, one-time, one-hour informational sessions for students who are getting ready for the WPG. The workshop will give you information about the exam, show you a sample WPG exam, and give you a chance to ask any questions you might have about the exam.

AFTER THE EXAM: Scores for the WPG exam should be available approximately one week after the exam is completed. Students who are identified as needing additional help in order to complete graduate-level writing tasks will be required to take a Graduate Writing Intensive (GWI) course in their graduate program or to take ENGL 220W (offered through the College of Continuing Education). Alternatively, students may also attempt to retake the GRE/GMAT and obtain a score of 4.5 or better on the analytical writing section (see Option A above). The WPG scores and instructions are as follows. To find their scores, students should click on the “Test Score Summary” link in the My Sac State Student Center.
Requirement met through Option A equivalency standards. No further classes required.
Requirement met through WPG test score. No further classes required.
Requirement not met. Take a GWI course through your graduate program or ENGL 220W through CCE.
Step 2: Graduate students must complete Step 1 of the graduate-level GWAR requirement before they advance to candidacy. The graduate-level GWAR is then met through the completion of each student’s graduate program requirements.
Effective Fall 2010, completion of the undergraduate-level GWAR requirement at Sac State or any other CSU campus will NOT fulfill the graduate-level GWAR. Students who graduated from a CSU campus who intend to complete their graduate degrees at Sac State will need to follow the above graduate-level GWAR requirement to graduate.

One course designated as Writing Intensive is required for graduation. Writing Intensive courses are identified in the General Education pattern section by an *. Students may have the option of meeting this requirement with a course offered in the major; check with your major department.
Prerequisites for enrollment in a Writing Intensive course:
- A score of 8 or above on the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) taken on or before 5/9/2011;
- A grade of ‘C-‘ or better in ENGL 109M/ENGL 109W taken Summer semester 2009 or before;
- A score of 80 on the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) exam;
- A 3-unit placement in ENGL 109M/ENGL 109W taken Fall semester 2009 or later (indicated by a WPJ score of 80 on the student’s record);
- A score of 70 or 71 on the WPJ exam and co-enrollment in ENGL 109X;
- A 4-unit placement in ENGL 109M/ENGL 109W taken Fall semester 2009 or later (indicated by a WPJ score of 70 or 71 on the student’s record) and co-enrollment in ENGL 109X;
- A WPJ score of 90 certifying that the student completed the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) at another CSU campus before transferring to Sacramento State.

Successful completion of a Writing Intensive course with a C- or better fulfills the GWAR for undergraduate students.
According to CSU Executive Order 665, students who receive certain placement scores on the EPT and/or ELM are required to enroll in the appropriate preparatory courses in their first semester of enrollment. All preparatory courses must be completed within the student’s first year of enrollment; otherwise, the student will not be allowed to continue at the University, resulting in Administrative Disqualification.
If students are administratively disqualified, they will be required to complete General Education English and/or mathematics requirements at a community college with a “C-“ or higher grade before returning to the University. The EPT and ELM scores and the appropriate course placement are shown below.
If you are an entering freshman who scores in one of the ranges below GE level on the EPT, it is recommended that you enroll in the course which corresponds to your placement range in the first semester at Sacramento State. You must also enroll for the next course in the sequence in the following semester until college level English is complete.
If English is your second language and you did not take the EPT at Sacramento State, you must take the English Diagnostic Test (EDT). For more information, contact the English Department at (916) 278-6586. If you took the EPT at Sacramento State, you completed a survey to determine if you were multilingual. If your responses to the survey indicated that you were multilingual, your EPT essay was assessed to determine if you could benefit from writing courses designed for multilingual students. If so, you were given an EDT score of 3, 4, or 5 in addition to your EPT score. See the “Multilingual” chart below for information on placement in multilingual courses.
The ELM examination tests for entry level mathematics skills acquired through three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics coursework (normally Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry). All undergraduate students must take the test or be exempted from it prior to placement in appropriate university mathematics coursework.
To register for the EPT and/or ELM, go to the Testing Center Web site at http://www.csus.edu/testing and register online by the registration deadline dates. Students who require special accommodations because of disabilities should contact the office of Services to Students with Disabilities, Lassen Hall Room 1008, (916) 278-6955. Suitable paperwork must then be submitted by the SSWD office to the Testing Center by the deadline test date selected.
Any of the following exempts you from the ELM:
- a score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of the College Board SAT I Reasoning Test or on the College Board SAT II Mathematics Tests Level I, IC (Calculator), II, or IIC (Calculator);
- a score of 23 or above on the enhanced ACT Mathematics Test taken October 1989 or later;
- a score of 24 or above on the ACT Mathematics Test taken prior to October 1989;
- a score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics Examination (AB or BC);
- a score of 550 or above on the Level I, IC, II, or IIC SAT II Mathematics Test;
- a score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Statistics Examination;
- CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) exemption;
- conditional exemption from CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) and validation of at least a “C” grade in a senior math course above the level of Algebra II (e.g., Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics) or a laboratory science course that requires Algebra II as a prerequisite (e.g., Physics);
- completion and transfer of a course that satisfies the General Education-Breadth or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) quantitative reasoning requirement, provided such course was completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Mathematics: If you are not exempt from the ELM Exam, you must satisfy the ELM requirement by either passing the ELM Exam or passing the appropriate preparatory math courses. If you do not pass the ELM, you must enroll in your required ELM equivalency course during your first semester at Sacramento State and enroll in the subsequent semester if you are required to take a second course. Your ELM exam score and whether you plan to take MATH 1 or a math course other than MATH 1 for your GE Area B4 will determine the course or course sequence you should take to satisfy the ELM requirement.
After passing the ELM Exam or the appropriate ELM equivalency courses, you may enroll in MATH 1 for the General Education Quantitative Reasoning requirement or take a Mathematics Department Diagnostic Test as a prerequisite to enrollment in other mathematics courses. * For students planning to take a GE Area B4 math course other than MATH 1 - Courses in this category are MATH 17, 24, 26A, 26B, 29, 30, 31, 35, STAT 1, 50. Successful completion of a Diagnostic Exam is a prerequisite for these GE math courses. Contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for GE math information, (916) 278-6534.
The Early Start Program is for CSU First-time Freshmen who have not demonstrated college ready proficiency in Mathematics and/or English. Beginning in Fall 2012, new freshmen who need extra preparation to be ready for college-level English and/or Math must start that process no later than the summer before their first term.
For Fall 2012, students whose scores on the English Placement Test (EPT) and/or the Entry Level Math Test (ELM) are in the following ranges are required to participate:
- English Placement Test (EPT): less than 138;
- Entry Level Math Test (ELN): less than 50.
The following students are exempt from Early Start, and will not be required to participate in Early Start for Fall 2012:
- Students who received qualifying scores in the appropriate areas of the EAP, SAT, SAT Subject, ACT or AP exams;
- Students who took an approved college-level English course and earned a C- or better—these students are also exempt from the English Placement Test (EPT);
- Students who took an approved college-level math course and earned a C- or better—these students are also exempt from the Entry Level Math exam (ELM);
- International students and residents of states other than California (non-residents);
- Students participating in the Sacramento State Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Summer Bridge Program.
To complete Early Start:
- Students should check www.csus.edu/earlystart/ for further information and to register their intentions for completing the Early Start requirement;
- Summer session courses will be offered at all CSU campuses. Early Start requirements can be completed at any CSU. Sacramento State will be offering online Early Start courses in Math and English;
- Students may also enroll in approved Community College course(s) instead of taking Early Start courses through the CSU.

You must complete a total of 51 units distributed among the Areas specified in this pattern. At least 9 units must be in upper division GE courses (100-199) taken after you complete 60 units of coursework. Enrollment in upper division GE courses is limited to students who have completed Areas A1, A2, A3, and have taken at least 45 units (not limited to GE classes). At least nine units of GE must be taken in residence (i.e., at Sacramento State). For a complete listing of GE courses go to the"GE Pattern List”.

STUDENTS WITH CATALOG RIGHTS BEGINNING FALL 1992 OR LATER ARE REQUIRED TO MEET THE ADDITIONAL COLLEGE COMPOSITION II
A second semester composition course is required of all students with catalog rights beginning Fall 1992 or later. Completion of Engl 20 (or an approved equivalent) with a grade of “C-” or better fulfills this graduation requirement. Completion of Engl 1A (or the equivalent) with a grade of “C-” or better is a prerequisite.

Several undergraduate programs offer enough evening, weekend, or eLearning courses to enable a student to complete a degree by attending only evenings, weekends, or online. Although these programs do not follow a “cohort model” with a planned sequence of courses over a two to three year period, students can complete degrees with proper planning and advising. Examples of these programs are: Art Studio, Child Development, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, English, Government, History, Philosophy, Social Work, and Vocational Education.
