The Community Engagement Center, a division of Academic Affairs, focuses Sacramento State's greatest resource - the knowledge and skills of faculty and students - on making a difference in the community. Our mission is to facilitate learning and engagement by linking campus and community for mutual benefit. The Community Engagement Center works closely with local non profits, schools, government agencies, and campus based programs that provide service to underserved, underrepresented populations throughout the Sacramento region.

Although the University Health Center provides many services, it may not be able to meet all medical needs. Supplementary medical insurance may be purchased at the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Business and Administration Office. Brochures and applications for Domestic and International medical coverage are available at the ASI Business and Administration Office in the University Union, third floor, open Monday-Friday. This insurance requires the Sacramento State Student Health Center be utilized first, if feasible, before seeking services from other medical care providers. Important Notice to Students – All students are required to obtain a photo identification card if they wish to use campus services such as library privileges, student activities, student health services, athletic events, elections, etc. Other persons may not use your card for any authorized service.
The Sacramento State OneCard is the University’s official identification card for students. The Sacramento State OneCard allows students to access campus services and also functions as a debit card and/or a Wells Fargo ATM debit card when linked to a Wells Fargo checking account.
The Sacramento State OneCard can be purchased at the Student Financial Services Center located in Lassen Hall 1001.

Sacramento State encourages the campus community to seek alternative means of transportation when commuting to and from the campus. University Transportation & Parking Services (UTAPS) provides a full range of commute alternatives through Sac State Commute Choices.
Hornet Express Shuttle and Public Transit
The Hornet Express Shuttle provides convenient transportation around campus and to and from the residential areas of La Riviera Drive, Howe/Arden Fair, and the 65th Street light rail station. The Hornet Express Shuttle is available free of charge to all Sacramento State students, faculty, and staff with a valid Sacramento State OneCard. The Hornet Express Shuttle normally operates when Fall and Spring semester classes are in session. Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) services the Greater Sacramento Area with buses that arrive at and depart from Sacramento State throughout the day. Sacramento State students may ride any Sacramento Regional Transit bus or light rail train at no additional fee with a Sacramento State commuter pass. Employees may purchase an employee commuter pass, with the same privileges, for $20 per year at the UTAPS office in Folsom Hall or the Student Financial Services Center in Lassen Hall.
Night Shuttle Service
The Hornet Express Night Shuttle is a demand-responsive service transporting the campus community within the campus, including parking lots. Night Shuttle service is available Monday-Thursday from dusk until 11:00pm when Fall and Spring semester classes are in session. For Night Shuttle service, please dial (87260) from any campus telephone or (916) 278-7260 from a non-campus phone. The shuttle typically arrives within 5-15 minutes.
Bicycles are permitted on all campus roadways; however, are not permitted on walking paths and sidewalks. For your convenience, Sacramento State offers a staffed bicycle parking compound. The use of the bicycle parking compound is free of charge. The bicycle compound is located adjacent to the Guy West Bridge on the east side of campus and is normally staffed Monday-Thursday from 7:00am to 11:00pm and Friday from 7:00am to 5:00pm when Fall and Spring semester classes are in session. Although the bicycle compound is staffed to help deter theft, bicycles parked in the compound are parked at the owner’s risk. Bicycle lockers are available for a fee through the Peak Adventures Office in the University Union. For additional information, please contact the UTAPS office.
Parking – You need a parking permit to park at Sacramento State
California State laws and CSU parking regulations that pertain to parking are enforced 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Parking permits are valid only for the period of time specified on the permit and for the parking spaces intended unless otherwise noted. Parking permits may not be transferred from one person to another. A parking permit is valid for use only by the person who purchased the parking permit. Each person may possess one valid Sacramento State parking permit at a time and does not guarantee the holder a parking space on campus. Parking is permitted only in designated, marked parking spaces. Parking permits may be purchased at the Student Financial Services Center in Lassen Hall or at the UTAPS office. Parking citations that are not paid or appealed within the designated time limits (CVC 40207, 40215) may result in late fees, collection costs, hold on DMV vehicle registration, hold on Sacramento State records, and/or immobilization/towing of vehicle.
Display of Parking Permits
Semester and weekly hangtag parking permits must be displayed from the rear view mirror. Adhesive parking permits must be adhered to the driver’s side of the windshield in the lower corner, above the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Daily and courtesy parking permits must be displayed face-up on the driver’s side of the dashboard with the valid date clearly visible from the outside of the vehicle.
Off Peak Parking
During off-peak parking periods, most student and faculty/staff parking spaces are open to all Sac State parking permits. NOTE: A Faculty/Staff parking permit is required at all times in the faculty/staff section in Parking Structure I and faculty/staff spaces located around the Residence Hall Complex. A Residence Hall parking permit is required at all times in Residence Hall spaces in Lot 2.
An off-peak parking period is defined as: Monday-Friday after 4:30pm during the Fall and Spring semesters, Saturday, Sunday, campus closure holidays, Summer, Winter Intersession, Spring Recess and Finals week.
Carpool Parking Permits
Carpooling at Sacramento State is encouraged. Carpoolers may share the price of a parking permit and may park in preferential designated carpool areas. Faculty/staff and student parking permits may be exchanged at no cost for carpool parking permits or purchased directly at the UTAPS office. A carpool consists of two or more people per vehicle, who must arrive in a carpool space together. Carpool parking permits are valid in carpool spaces on the first floors of Parking Structures I and III. Student carpool permits are not valid in faculty/staff carpool spaces in Lot 1. Carpool spaces are enforced as such until 11:00am. After 11:00am, carpool spaces in Parking Structures I & III are enforced as student spaces and carpool spaces in Lot 1 are enforced as faculty/staff spaces.
Motorcycle Parking Permits
A motorcycle parking permit is required to park a motorcycle at Sacramento State. Motorcycle parking permits are valid only in motorcycle parking spaces. A motorcycle adhesive parking permit must be placed in an easily visible location on the fender, fork or gas tank. Placing the adhesive motorcycle permit elsewhere on the motorcycle may result in a parking citation. As an alternative to purchasing a motorcycle-only parking permit, people who drive vehicles and motorcycles may purchase a dual use parking permit. The dual use permit may be displayed in a vehicle or on a motorcycle. While displayed on a motorcycle, the parking permit is only valid in motorcycle parking spaces. While displayed in a vehicle, the parking permit is valid as a faculty/staff or student parking permit (as indicated on the parking permit). It is the parking permit holder's responsibility to ensure the security of the parking permit. Hangtag parking permits used on motorcycles will not be replaced by UTAPS if they are lost or stolen.
Parking Permits for Persons with Disabilities
At Sacramento State, each parked vehicle must have a valid parking permit. To park in disabled parking spaces on campus, a valid Sacramento State parking permit and disabled person placard or license plate must be displayed. Disabled persons may park in timed spaces without time restrictions when they display a valid Sacramento State parking permit and disabled person placard or license plate. Loading zones are intended for active loading and unloading and are not considered to be parking spaces. Disabled placards and license plates are not valid in loading zones.
Residence Hall Parking Permits
Student parking permits may be exchanged at no cost for Residence Hall parking permits or purchased directly at the UTAPS office. DO NOT try to purchase a Residence Hall parking permit online. Residence Hall parking permits are issued to students who live in the Residence Hall Complex. Residence Hall parking permits are valid in the Residence Hall Lot, Lot 11 and Lot 2 student section. Residence Hall parking permits issued to students are not valid at any time in faculty/staff spaces in Parking Structure I or in the faculty/staff spaces located immediately around the Residence Hall complex area.
Lost, Stolen, and Counterfeit Parking Permits
If a parking permit is lost or stolen, please report the loss to UTAPS. UTAPS will record the parking permit as lost or stolen and will enforce the parking permit as such. UTAPS does not replace lost or stolen parking permits. Upon reporting a lost or stolen parking permit, UTAPS may authorize the purchase of a replacement parking permit. It is a violation to display a lost, stolen, or counterfeit parking permit and may result in a parking citation being issued and/or other Sacramento State correction action.

The Sacramento State College of Continuing Education encourages lifelong learning by providing opportunities for personal and professional development. Continuing Education’s wide range of courses, programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences are designed to connect the campus with the community, meet the challenges of the workforce, and address current trends in today’s society.
Through Continuing Education, individuals have access to both credit and non-credit courses, many without formal admission to the University. Students can expand their interests, prepare for promotion, enhance their skills, or seek a new career path.
Continuing Education’s certificate and credential programs offer specialized training in specific career areas. Programs include: business operations, organizational development, management and leadership, criminal justice, health and human services, public administration, education and administration, several degree-completion programs, ESL, travel study, and others.
Course schedules are designed to be compatible with the time constraints and priorities of adults and working professionals. All of the instructors are industry experts who offer real-world experience using adult learning methodologies.
Continuing Education also offers access to a variety of courses to help students attain their learning objectives through interactive online teaching formats. Students can sharpen their skills and develop new expertise without sacrificing their commitments to job or family. Open University allows non-matriculated students to enroll in regular University courses without going through the formal admission process. Students are admitted to classes on a space-available basis, upon departmental approval and are required to meet all course prerequisites. Open University is designed for those who are interested in attending or returning to college, or professionals seeking to update and expand their knowledge or explore a career change.
Please follow the steps outlined below to register for a course through Open University.
- Obtain an Open University registration form from Continuing Education in Napa Hall, by visiting http://www.cce.csus.edu or by calling (916) 278-6984.
- Attend the first class meeting and notify the instructor that you plan to add the course through Open University. Obtain the instructor’s and the department chair’s approval signature on the registration form.
- Submit the registration form with fees to Continuing Education Records in Napa Hall during the third week of the semester. Beginning with the fourth week of the semester, a $25 late fee will be assessed.
Winter Intersession is a three-week session offered each year in January. By taking classes during Winter Intersession, students can accelerate their degree requirements, pursue an area of interest or reduce their class load for the Fall and Spring semesters. High school graduates, community college students, other university transfer students, and matriculated and non-matriculated Sacramento State students are all welcome to register for Winter Intersession classes. All students pay the same per unit fee regardless of their Sacramento State enrollment status.

IRT provides a variety of technology services to students. This includes the campus network, computer labs, IRT Service Desk, Student Technology Center, as well as the SacLink Email and the University portal My Sac State 2.0.
Access to all University services is via each student’s individual SacLink account. This is required for registration and all other major services across campus. Your SacLink account is required to have a secure password and the account is not to be shared with anyone. To setup, manage your accounts, aliases, and passwords, please visit http://www.saclink.csus.edu.
There are nine general access labs managed by IRT. The two largest are in the ARC building (room 2004, open 24x6) and the Library (2nd floor). There are many other smaller labs around campus, including several computers available in the University Union and various departmental labs. More information, including schedules, can be found on the Labs Web site at http://www.csus.edu/irt/Desktop/classrooms-labs/Computer%20lab.html.
The IRT Service Desk, located in ARC 2005, is the central technology support service for students across campus. You can reach the IRT Service Desk by calling (916) 278-7337, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or by simply visiting ARC 2005. Hours are posted on the Helpdesk Web site.
The Student Technology Center is located in ARC 3007. This facility is open to serve students directly with problems or questions related to their academic responsibilities. It is better to make an appointment to insure that assistance relevant to the problem is available when you visit. The STC also offers training workshops on various topics. The STC works with the campus faculty to determine what students’ specific technology needs are.
Access to many of the services are via the Web portal, located at My Sac State 2.0 or via the University’s home page. The portal is secure and provides ready access to email, SacCT (WebCT), and many other services. Again, a valid SacLink account is required.
All use of University computer and network facilities by students must be for “appropriate use”. Appropriate use of computing and networking facilities is defined as being only those in support of academic and student activities such as class work, teaching, research, and similar activities. The University policy covering acceptable use of University computing and communications technology can be found at http://www.csus.edu/umanual. The main items relating to students are:
- Threats, Harassment. Users may not use campus computing or network services to threaten, harass*, defame, or otherwise interfere with the legal rights of others. (*Harassment is defined as the creation of an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment).
- Illegal file-sharing and other copyright violations are a violation of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. Illegally sharing or obtaining copyrighted material is also a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy and of the University’s Student Conduct Code.
- Respect for Privacy. Users must respect the privacy of other users. Examples of lack of respect for the privacy of others include reading their mail, accessing their files, or using their computer account or electronic mail address.
- Sharing of Account. Users may not share their password with others or let others use their account.
- Use for Profit. Users may not use campus resources in furtherance of profit-making activities. Approved campus affiliates or agencies can use campus resources for profit activities. Approval must come from the University.
- System Disruption. Users must not intentionally disrupt the campus computing system or obstruct the work of other users, such as by interfering with the accounts of others, introducing or spreading malicious programs, or knowingly consuming inordinately large amounts of system resources.
- Operational Procedures. Users must respect the University’s operational procedures for computing and networking services. Users are responsible for knowing and abiding by posted computer lab and network procedures.
- Other Illegal/Incompatible Uses. Users may not use computing and networking services for uses that are inconsistent, incompatible, or in conflict with state or federal law, CSU policy, or University policy. Attempts by anyone to access accounts or files belonging to other people are strictly forbidden and illegal, according to the January 1980 California Computer Crime penal code (Senate Bill 66). Any attempt to “break into”, disrupt, or manipulate any source of data also constitutes a felony and may lead to disciplinary or even legal action.

Saclink Account setup & management
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights include:
The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. Students should submit to the registrar, dean, head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect.
The University official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the University official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom request should be addressed.
The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Students may ask the University to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading.They should write the University official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the University decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the University will notify the student of the decision and advise information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.
The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records and the right to withdraw consent to disclosure.
FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the University in an administrative, supervisory, academic, research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with whom the University has contracted (such as an auditor, clearinghouse, or collection agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. In addition, the University may disclose education records without consent upon request a) to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll and b) to a parent who establishes that student’s status as a dependent according to Internal Revenue Code.

California State University, Sacramento shall exercise its prerogative within the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, as amended, and release directory information to any person, party, or agency, so long as the student has not requested confidentiality. University directory information is defined as that information contained in an education record of the student that generally would not be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. The following is considered Directory Information and Sacramento State will release and make available to the public unless notified by the student to withhold release of this information: Student’s name, addresses, University email address, telephone number, likenesses used in University publications including photographs, date of birth, major field of study, class level, dates of attendance, enrollment status (part/full-time), degrees earned, awards and honors (e.g., Dean’s Honor List) received, participation in University recognized activities and sports, weight and health of members of athletic teams and most recent educational agency or institution attended by the student. For student employees covered by the Unit 11 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the United Auto Workers (e.g., Teaching Associates, Graduate Assistants, and Instructional Student Assistants), directory information which may be released by the CSU to the UAW also includes: enrollment status (undergraduate vs. graduate, part-time vs. full-time), department employed and employment status (e.g., TA, GA, or ISA). Data may be added to or removed from the definition of directory information from time to time. Only currently enrolled students may withhold disclosure of directory information by filing a request form with the Office of the Registrar through the Student Services Counter.

SSWD offers a wide range of support services and accommodations to students in order to ensure students with disabilities equal access and opportunity to pursue their educational goals. Services and accommodations are provided to students with visual, hearing, mobility impairments, specific learning disabilities, psychiatric disorders, and/or other types of disabilities. Students must submit medical or professional documentation prior to meeting with a counselor for a needs assessment and accommodation plan. The High Tech Center offers students with disabilities computer and assistive computer technology training, access, and alternative media production upon referral from Services to Students with Disabilities (SSWD). Assistive technology includes screen magnification, screen reading, voice recognition, and scan/read systems. Limited training, based on the student’s needs, is provided through small group and individualized instruction. Students referred for training and use of the High Tech Center must have an active file at Services to Students with Disabilities verifying their disability. Study abroad opportunities are available in 23 countries through the Office of Global Education. Students may study for an academic year or one semester at a host university or special study center and earn Sacramento State resident credit for their courses taken abroad. Courses in almost all majors are offered on the study abroad programs.
Knowledge of a second language is not necessary for many countries; however, these programs offer an excellent opportunity to study a language in the country where it is spoken. Financial aid and/or scholarships may be available. Those interested in study abroad should come to Lassen Hall 2304 or call (916) 278-6686.
Applicants are required to include their correct social security numbers in designated places on applications for admission pursuant to the authority contained in Section 41201, Title 5, California Code of Regulations, and Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code. The University uses the social security number to identify records pertaining to the student as well as to identify the student for purposes of financial aid eligibility and disbursement, the repayment of financial aid, and other debts payable to the institution. Also, the Internal Revenue Service requires the University to file information returns that include the student’s social security number and other information such as the amount paid for qualified tuition, related expenses, and interest on educational loans. That information is used to help determine whether a student, or a person claiming a student as a dependent, may take a credit or deduction to reduce federal income taxes. The student’s social security number is NOT used as the individual identifier in all student records which may include: (1) application and admissions records, (2) registration records, (3) enrollment/transcript records, (4) financial aid records, (5) alumni records, and (6) records maintained by other University operated programs. A student is assigned a unique Sac State ID upon admittance to the University, which is used as the student identifier in all student records.
Such personally identifiable records are not shared or distributed to private individuals or agencies unless such sharing or distribution is authorized by the student or unless otherwise lawfully available. (See Appendix D in the University Catalog.)

The University and the Department of Public Safety encourage the prompt reporting of any incident that compromises the safety, health, or rights of University community members. The Department of Public Safety is the primary respondent for campus emergencies and reports of criminal activity on campus. Officers are fully certified by the State of California and cooperate with State and local police agencies, resulting in the University’s awareness of criminal activity perpetrated beyond the campus. Reports of criminal activity will be fully investigated, and appropriate referrals made to the courts, the University, or both.
Security and Access to Campus Facilities
Campus Buildings and Grounds: Buildings on the Sacramento State campus remain open only through the completion of the last scheduled event. A daily schedule is provided to Facilities Management and buildings are locked on the basis of that schedule. Only employees with offices in or maintenance responsibilities for those buildings have access after buildings are locked.
Residence Halls: Sacramento State Residence Hall policy requires that exterior doors be locked at all times. All residents are issued a key card for personal access. A resident must accompany all guests. Additional information is contained in the Guide to Residential Living available through the Office of Residential Life in Sierra Hall.
Personal Safety Training: The Department of Public Safety has full-time police officers who are available, on request, for presentations to students, faculty, or staff (916) 278-6851. A full-time Sacramento State employee is available for seminars concerning personal safety for women through the Rape Prevention Education Program (916) 278-7388. In addition, students are employed through the Department of Public Safety as Community Services Officers, with primary responsibility for additional security to the interior of campus and Residential Life Complex.
Publications: Brochures are available through the Department of Public Safety which provide additional information under the following titles: Do You Know How To Be Safe, Auto Theft, Stalking, Campus Theft, College Drinking, The University Police Safety Report, Preventing Date Rape, Hate Crimes, Public Safety Informational Brochure, Bicycle Registration Program, Get in Stride and Stay Safe, The Naked Truth, A Risky Relationship, Home Security and Street Sense, Safety Tips for Runners and Walkers, Staying Safe on Campus, Home Security Checklist. The Sacramento State Rape Prevention Program has a brochure on Rape Prevention and another on Acquaintance Rape. An Emergency Response Manual is available to the campus community through Public Safety, or online, with information concerning procedures for fire, earthquake, serious injury, bomb threat, hazardous material leaks, and crimes in progress.
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Sacramento State has made crime statistics available online at http://www.csus.edu/aba/police/cleryact.html. Reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Sacramento State and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus, during the last three years are included. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other safety matters. Print copies are available in the library and by request from the Office of Public Safety and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
The principles of truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a community of scholars and teachers. California State University, Sacramento (hereafter referred to as Sacramento State) expects that both faculty and students will honor these principles, and in so doing, will protect the integrity of academic work and student grades. Sacramento State is a publicly-assisted institution legislatively empowered to certify competence and accomplishment in general and discrete categories of knowledge. The President and faculty of Sacramento State are therefore obligated not only to the world at large but also to California to guarantee that substantive knowledge is actually acquired and the ability to acquire it is actually demonstrated by those to whom they assign grades and whom they recommend for degrees. Academic dishonesty defrauds all those who depend upon the integrity of the University, its courses and its degrees. This fraud is accomplished to the extent that faculty, students or campus employees knowingly or unwittingly allow academic dishonesty to work its deception.
