What Does it Cost?

Although it won't cost you money to join the SEE program it will cost you time, energy, and commitment. The SEE program is a community of learners united in a common goal. Students are expected to share their knowledge with other students, provide personal and moral support to each other, participate in academic and extracurricular activities and expand their understanding and appreciation for the cultural heritage of our diverse community.

The CSUS-Los Rios Science Transfer Project (STP) is an inter-institutional partnership of Sacramento area colleges funded by a "Bridges to the Baccalaureate" grant from the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences, a Division of the National Institutes of Health. The goal of this project is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who transfer from the Los Rios Colleges to CSUS to pursue majors related to biomedical research.

One of the means by which we hope to achieve this goal is by expanding the cadre of CSUS and Los Rios faculty engaged in mentoring and providing research experiences for the target student population. One of our long-term goals is to promote community college faculty and student research, whether it be at their home campus or at CSUS. Current opportunities for community college faculty and students are limited. Increasing opportunities will require collaborations and/or successful grant proposals for equipment, space renovation, and other research support. We are therefore offering a Research Training Experience that will enable faculty from the Los Rios Community Colleges to perform scientific research in collaboration with a faculty member in the Center for Interdisciplinary Molecular Biology Education, Research and Advancement (CIMERA) at Sacramento State.

To facilitate this research experience, the project will provide release time (up to $14,449 in salary) during the academic year in which the research is performed, as well as $1000 in research supplies. Release time units may be used in a single semester or distributed over two semesters, as determined by the CSUS researcher, the trainee, and the trainee's dean. No salary is provided for summer research.

CIMERA faculty members usually have many research ideas that they do not have the time to do themselves, but which they do not want to entrust to students. They would all welcome the chance to have a talented scientist work with them. Note that basic skills and a desire to participate are more important than specific skill sets. The purpose of the program is to the provide community college faculty the opportunity to develop, update, or continue research interests in collaboration with the Sacramento State faculty.

A list of CIMERA faculty members is attached, with their research interests and phone numbers. If you are interested in working with a particular CIMERA faculty member, you may contact that professor directly, to discuss potential research projects. Or if you would like more information about this program, please contact Mary McCarthy Hintz (278-4534 or mccarthy@csus.edu).

Applications are now being accepted for two traineeships for the 2006-2007 academic year. To apply for this program, please provide:

1. A statement that addresses: " your science or math background " the name of the CSUS faculty member with whom you are interested in collaborating " a short description of at least one research question you might be interested in exploring " how your participation will advance the overall STP goal of increasing the number of students from underrepresented groups who pursue research careers in the biomedical sciences

2. A letter of support from your dean.

Applications should be submitted to the following address by November 15, 2006.
