Fall 2005 Scholar-in-Residence:
Description of Project The purpose of this study is to examine and identify leading health-related issues & disparities among Latinos in the Sacramento region. Data analyses will be two-fold. First, using meta-analysis, Dr. Wycoff will draw upon findings from recently published national survey data of Latino and non-Latino/White populations, including studies by state-wide health indices and report cards, private research institutions, and available figures taken from county survey and community-based monitoring projects. Second, by working through the Office of Community Collaboration, Dr. Wycoff has incorporated a service learning component in her graduate research course, whereby counselor education students are engaged in challenging community service that meets identified community needs and links academic study through intentional learning goals and structured reflection. Specifically, Dr. Wycoff and her graduate students are assisting the Mexican American Alcoholism Program (MAAP) in 2 research projects. The first includes administering, analyzing, and reporting findings from the 2005 Bi-National Health Week's Northern California Latino Health Symposium sponsored in part by MAAP, the California Department of Health Services, Mexico's Secretariat of Health, Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, the Mexican Institute for Social Security, and the Mexican Consulates in California. The second project includes analyzing and reporting results from MAAP's Community Health Center Planning Questionnaire as part of a needs assessment on community-based medical/mental health service delivery. |
