Environmental Sociology
Next taught Spring 2008
This is an introductory course on environmental sociology:
the study of human society, the natural environment, and their mutual
interactions. In this course we will examine environmental sociology on several
levels, from the micro level of individual communities to the meso level of
government policies to macro theoretical considerations. Several questions will
focus the course: What is the environment? How does it affect society? What is
society? How does society affect the environment? What problems are there and
how might they be addressed? Most importantly, this course will ask you to take
a careful look at the assumptions behind our social system and examine our
society and nature with a critical eye.
a note on the lecture
notes: the notes will be posted generally the day before lecture.
in some cases i may post them earlier, but they may change, so do not print them
until close to the lecture day, even if they are posted earlier!! if there
is a link but it doesn't go anywhere it is because i have not posted those files
