"Accessible Learning through Technology"

Objectives:
This year, Disability Awareness Day will focus on accessible technology and will include multiple events of interest to the campus and community. Activities are designed to create dialogue in the campus community about:
• accessible technology
• universal design for learning
• the accessibility of education for all students
This event is a collaborative effort between Services to Students with Disabilities, TRIO Student Support Services Program, Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Technology and Creative Services, and the University Library at Sacramento State. Partial funding for this event comes from a University Enterprises, Inc. Project Activity Grant.
Schedule of Activities:
9:00-11:00 am: High Tech Center Tour - AIRC 2010
The activities for the day will begin with demonstrations of assistive technology and a Tour of the SSWD High Tech Center in the Academic Information Resource Center. SSWD staff will demonstrate assistive technologies such as screen readers, braille embossers, voice recognition, and realtime captioning. Vendors from the Sendero Group will demonstrate a cutting-edge Braille-integrated GPS travel system for accessible location information. Open to all.
12:00 - 1:15 pm: Faculty Strategies Workshop on Universal Design - LIBRARY 4026
The Center for Teaching and Learning will host a Faculty Teaching Strategies Workshop: Brown Bag Discussion on "Universal Design of Instruction." Participants will learn how to apply principles of universal design to make teaching and learning more accessible to all students, including those with varying abilities and disabilities and students whose first language is not English. Open to Faculty.
1:30 - 2:30 pm: Student Panel Discussion - UNIVERSITY UNION LOBBY SUITE
A Student Panel will share their experiences in the college classroom and provide an opportunity to discuss what is required to support both students and faculty in creating a more accessible and inclusive learning environment for all. Open to all.
3:00 - 4:00 pm: Faculty/Staff Resource Center - AIRC 3008
The Faculty Staff Resource Center and staff from Academic Technology and Creative Services (ATCS) will host a presentation on resources available to assist Sacramento State faculty and staff in the use of technology, including strategies for supporting accessibility. Open to Faculty/Staff.
4:00 - 5:00 pm: Freedom Machines Screening - LIBRARY 1522
The University Library will screen a movie from its Film Collection, Freedom Machines, (57 minutes closed captioned) in Library Media Center Room 1522. Freedom Machines profiles four individuals with disabilities whose lives are being transformed by the utilization of assistive technology. Open to all.
