High Tech Center Lab Policy

High Tech Center Lab

  1. THE HIGH TECH CENTER (HTC) is for the exclusive use by Services to Students with Disabilities (SSWD) students to complete Sacramento State coursework.
    • Students who are not SSWD students are not allowed access to this lab.
    • Equipment /supplies in the HTC are NOT for personal use.
  2. The HTC is comprised of a training room (room 2010) and a working lab (room 2011)

Training room (2010) policies include:

  • Students who are currently enrolled in LS9 have priority use of the systems in this facility.
  • Content of instruction includes computer and word processing basics; appropriate adaptive technology (screen magnification, screen reading, scan/read programs, etc.) based on the student’s disability.  It does NOT include graphics, desktop publishing, and use of compilers, any department specific software or library databases.  For more advanced training with “non-adaptive” technology, students are encouraged to enroll in specific classes or workshops elsewhere on this campus.
  • Other students may use this training room upon approval if there are available computers and if it does interrupt instruction.

Working lab (2011) policies include:

          • COMPUTER PROFICIENCY - Students must be computer proficient before requesting use of the HTC working lab to complete coursework.  This includes the ability to independently access the software, create, move, edit, spell check, print and save the document.  If these tasks cannot be performed independently, the student may enroll in LS9 to develop this proficiency level.  (See HTC staff for details on LS9.)
          • Do not use more than one computer during a log-in session.

Working Lab (2011) and Training Lab (2010) policies include:

  • ACCESS TO DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC SOFTWARE/LIBRARY DATABASES – The High Tech Center may make certain department specific software (e.g. - SPSS) or library databases available for student use; however, it is not the responsibility of the HTC staff to provide assistance in the use of that software or in researching databases.  If students need assistance with that software or in doing research, they need to ask University personnel who specialize in that software/database for assistance.  Use of any programming compilers is expressly forbidden.
  • INTERNET ACCESS – Internet access is to be used ONLY for the completion of Sacramento State coursework.   Nothing is to be downloaded from the Internet on to the systems in the High Tech Center.   Students will be expected to adhere to the University Computer and Network User Code of Ethics Policy which can be found at http://www.csus.edu/uccs/about/policies/ethics.html
  • PRINTING – Limited to no more than 20 pages per day per student.  Please check with HTC staff if you need to exceed that limit. Only HTC Staff can add paper or other materials.
  • RESPECT OTHER’S NEED FOR QUIET
  • NO TUTORING ALLOWED
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK IS PERMITTED
  • HIGH TECH CENTER CLOSINGS – Occasionally, the High Tech Center will be closed for test administration, demonstrations or tours.  Advance notice will always be given. However there may be occasions when the closing is immediate, as in the case of power failure.
  • DO NOT LEAVE FILES ON THE HARD DRIVE – THEY WILL BE PURGED.  Students are responsible for saving their own files to appropriate media. Please ask for assistance if you are not familiar with the process.  Students must make sure that whatever media they save (CD, USB) is formatted before trying to save to it.  Please note that a Mac can read/save to a disk that has been formatted for a PC; however a PC cannot read/save to a Mac disk.
  • NO MODIFICATIONS TO PROGRAMS OR HARD DRIVES ARE ALLOWED.
  • DO NOT COPY SOFTWARE FROM THE HARD DRIVE
  • SETTINGS – Do not access and make changes within the control panel unless it is with staff permission.  If changed, settings must then be changed back to the original before shutting down.
  • TELEPHONE USAGE – Phones are for staff use only.  Please do NOT have calls returned here or answer incoming calls.  Cell phones must be turned OFF when in the HTC.
  • PERSONAL ITEMS – Please remove personal items from the area of the computer you are working on when you leave for more than 15 minutes.  Another person may need to use the computer.  Please do not leave personal items in the lab overnight.
  • PRIVILEGES REVOKED - Any student who causes a disruption or disturbance will be asked to leave the HTC. Students who are disruptive or abusive to staff may have their lab privileges revoked.  Lab privileges may also be revoked if students are observed damaging equipment, furniture or software, or are violating University or this HTC policy.
