Executive Director, Student Health & Counseling Services
Joy Stewart-James began working in college health in August 2007 after spending over twenty years in hospital healthcare systems. Soon after joining Sac State she assumed overall leadership for both Student Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services. During her first two years in service, Sacramento State successfully designed and constructed a new health facility in collaboration with recreation services to create a fully integrated collegiate recreation wellness facility, The WELL, which opened in September 2010.
During the past three years, Joy has lead the effort to transition from a traditional medical-based model to a proactive wellness model. She also successfully transitioned the health and counseling centers to a shared electronic health record system thereby further advancing the integration of the two programs and promoting an interdisciplinary care model. Student Health & Counseling Services is fully accredited by AAAHC.
Joy serves on several university committees including the Campus Health Oversight Committee, Emergency Operations Committee, Student Health Advisory Committee, and the CSU System-wide Committee on Student Health Insurance.
In addition, Joy has assisted in the submission and execution of awarded grants and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of American College Health. She has a doctorate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and additional degrees from the University of Oregon and Florida International University.
