Starting a Club
Groups wishing to be recognized for the first time must meet with a Student Activities Advisor to discuss their plans and submit an Organization Pre-Recognition Request. Upon approval the group is permitted to use University facilities on three occasions for organizational purposes over a 60 day period. During this time the group should be able to ascertain if there are in fact other interested students warranting formation of an organization and time to prepare a constitution and registration materials. Under Pre-Recognition, groups need not have 8 members, but do need a full-time faculty or staff member to serve as advisor. A major consideration for recognition is that the group add to the mission of the University without duplication of existing organizations. While on Pre-recognition status, an organization may not sponsor programs, seek funding in the name of the organization from the Dollars for Organizations and Clubs Council of ASI or any other source, or conduct fund raising activities in connection with membership recruitment. One officer from each new organization must also attend a Nuts and Bolts of Running a Student Organization workshop before the recognition process is complete.
New organizations may wish to refer to the Sample Constitution publication in the Leadership Development Resource Library as they develop their own Constitution and Bylaws.
Faculty/Staff Advisor
Organizations are required to have a full-time faculty or professional staff member with a classification of Student Services Professional I or higher, as an advisor. Groups are permitted to have non-University related advisors in addition to their faculty advisor if they wish. Selection of a particular person as advisor is the choice of the organization and is by mutual agreement of both parties. Faculty and staff often look forward to opportunities to work with students outside the traditional classroom and in areas of personal interests.
Use of the University's Name
Recognized organizations are permitted to use the name of California State University, Sacramento or Sac State only as a means of identifying the location of the organization. Such use should not imply University sponsorship or that the organization is an official agent of the University. Thus, the "Social Club of Sac State " would be permitted, but the "Sac State Social Club" would not be approved.
