University Exams
The Testing Center safeguards the integrity and accuracy of each test result by adhering to strict testing protocol. To eliminate the possibility of certain test breaches, photo identification is required of all test takers.
EPT/ELM
English Placement Test-- Assesses the reading and writing skill levels of entering lower division students for placement in the appropriate courses. You may take the EPT only once, per CSU system policy. If you take the test more than once, the results of any test beyond the first attempt will not be recognized. The fee for taking the EPT is $18.00.
Entry Level Math --Assesses the skill levels of entering CSU students in the areas of elementary and intermediate algebra and plane geometry for placement in the appropriate courses. Such skills generally are acquired in three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics courses in high school. The fee for taking the ELM is $18.00.

Foreign Language Proficiency Exam
Information about foreign language placement tests and satisfying the CSUS foreign language proficiency requirement can be obtained from the Foreign Language Department online or by calling the Foreign Language Department at (916) 278-6333.
Math Diagnostic Exams
Information about Math Diagnostic exams can be found in the CSUS online class schedule (footnote 29 and 32), or the printed Class Schedule. Math 30 Diagnostic, the Pre-calculus Diagnostic Test, is administered by the Testing Center at the times listed in the Class Schedule (footnote 29). Students must make appointments. Nursing Challenge Exams
Students with the appropriate nursing or health related background, education, knowledge or skills, and permission from their academic advisor, can take exams for credit (challenges) in lieu of selected nursing courses. The Testing Center administers challenge exams, by appointment only, usually during the first two weeks of the semester. There is no fee for these exams. Contact the Nursing Department online or call (916) 278-6525 for additional information about nursing challenge exam prerequisites.
Traditional Grammar Exam
English 110J challenge or the TESOL test. This exam tests knowledge of basic issues in traditional English grammar and usage needed by single-subject credential students expecting to teach high school English. Topics include parts of speech, functions of words in sentences, phrases and clauses, and punctuation. Schedule appointments on this website's homepage.
Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE)
The Writing Proficiency Examination is required to satisfy the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement before graduation. Students must take the WPE in the first semester of their junior year. For additional information contact the WPE Office, Calaveras Hall room 111,(916) 278-6409.
